IRS SCAM Alert!
The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver's license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

"This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country.  We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves.  Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer," says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. "If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don't pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn't the IRS calling." Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail

The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information.  This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.

More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.

Tips for Homeowners for coming Warmer Temperatures

Temperatures in the low-to-high 40s are expected in the Chicago area next week, and this can pose problems for homeowners.

All of the snow that's coating roofs, and ice that's clogging gutters, will melt quickly during the warm weather. This makes roofs and basements vulnerable to water.

Home and roof repair guys recommend people get as much snow and ice off their roofs, as long as they can do so safely.

U.S. Waterproofing suggests people make sure water can flow through their downspouts and away from their homes or buildings.

Frozen sump pump lines are also at risk. Experts recommend people use hair dryers to warm up pipes that are exposed.

Help Keep Fire Hydrants Clear of Snow

The recent snowfalls have hidden some fire hydrants and may be difficult to find during an emergency. The City is encouraging residents to clear fire hydrants nearest their residence or business of snow.  Fire fighters need at least a three-foot clearance on all sides of the hydrant, including a pathway to the hydrant from the street.

By taking a little time to clear a hydrant you are helping the Fire Department, your neighbors and yourself in the event of an emergency. The local fire departments and City personnel will also be assisting in the operations. If you have identified a snow buried fire hydrant and are unable to assist please call 630-353-8105.

OTHER GOVERNMENT NEWS AND EVENTS
Become an Openlands Treekeeper

Take action to protect trees in your community by becoming an Openlands Treekeeper®.

Forest trees can live for more than 100 years, but urban trees, forced to contend with limited space for growth and an array of other unnatural stresses, may survive for no more than 15 years unless they receive special attention.  Anywhere from 6,000 to 10,000 trees can die in Chicago in a single year--from storm damage, drought, insect pests and other causes.

TreeKeepers have worked throughout the city to keep its trees healthy, administering proper care and promptly recognizing and reporting harmful pests. Now, The Morton Arboretum is partnering with Openlands to bring the program to the western suburbs.  Learn to identify, plant, care for and prune trees in hands-on workshops with regional professionals, then put those skills into action through volunteer work in your community.  The classes are held indoors and outdoors.  Please dress for the weather and for outdoor walking in each session. There are no prerequisites, and the course number is H800.
