Holiday Light Recycling |
Don't know what to do with the old strands of Christmas lights that are tangled and broken? Don't throw them in the garbage - recycle them! The City of Darien has again partnered with Elgin Recycling to offer our residents free recycling of holiday lights! Last year Darien residents recycled 1873 pounds of Holiday Lights. Not only did this keep them from ending up in the landfill, the city made a profit of $280.95.
All light colors and strand lengths will be accepted. Items include mini-lights (Italian lights), C7 lights, C9 lights, rope lights, LED lights, and extension cords. (Please - no CFLs). From November 18th through February 7th you may bring your lights to the Darien Police Department lobby at 1710 Plainfield Road Monday thru Friday from 7am to 7pm, and Saturday & Sunday from 7am to 3pm. The City of Darien Free Fall Leaf Pickup runs thru November 29, on your normal garbage day. Leaves should be placed in brown kraft yard waste bags or in plastic garbage cans. If garbage cans are used they must have a permanent "YARD WASTE ONLY" label attached to the front of the can so the driver can identify it as leaf pickup. These labels are available free of charge at city hall. Residents are not permitted to rake leaves into the street. Com Ed Tree Trimming in Darien |
ComEd is committed to providing safe, reliable electric service. Vegetation Management plays a large part in that commitment. ComEd has scheduled maintenance tree trimming in the Marion Hills area this year. This work is necessary because trees interfering with electric wires can damage equipment and cause service outages and safety hazards.
They will be trimming any tree or brush that interferes with electric wires running from pole to pole. Trimming may or may not be required on your property, but all trees that do require trimming will be maintained during this project. Trimming is scheduled to start in the near future, and will be performed by a qualified line clearance contractor using qualified utility arborists. There is no charge for this professional service. Homes scheduled to have the trees trimmed will receive a postcard notification.
If you have any questions regarding this process, call 1-800-Edison-1 (1-800-334-7661) and ask to speak with a Vegetation Management Representative, or visit thier website at www.ComEd.com/trees |

Drivers Urged to be Aware of Deer |
The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County urges drivers to slow down and stay alert to avoid deer-vehicle collisions this fall. Accidents can occur at any time, but autumn - when deer are breeding, or "in rut" - is the most dangerous as they become more active and cross roads and highways more frequently. They're common along woods, fields, fencerows and waterways, but drivers can encounter them almost anywhere. Drivers are encouraged to be extremely cautious at dawn and dusk when deer are most active and visibility is poor and slow down when approaching deer. Deer often travel in groups, so if you see one, expect that there are more. For more information click here. |
