The City of Darien does not regulate Trick-or-Treat hours.  We recommend you Trick-or-Treat during daylight hours, and enjoy the Lions Club Halloween party at night.

Darien Lions Club Annual Halloween Party

The Darien Lions Club will host their annual Halloween Party on October 31, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Sportsplex, 451 Plainfield Road. There will be fun for kids of all ages.  This event is Free.  For more information please visit their website.

Halloween Pedestrian Safety Tips

Halloween can be a spooky time of the year for motorists and pedestrians as trick-or-treaters walk in and near roadways. In fact, the American Automobile Association (AAA) Foundation for Traffic Safety reports that October 31 is one of the deadliest nights of the year for pedestrians.

AAA urges motorists to slow down and drive with caution, especially in low-lit neighborhoods between the hours of 4 p.m. and midnight when pedestrians are most vulnerable. Also, if you plan to attend a Halloween party, arrange a sober driver to avoid the risks of impaired driving. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), from 2007-2011, 52 percent of all national vehicle related fatalities occurring on Halloween night involved a drunk driver.

Tips from AAA on ways motorists can help keep roadways safe this Halloween:

* Avoid driving through neighborhoods. If possible, avoid cutting through residential streets where trick-or-treaters are likely to be.

* Watch for children in the street. Trick-or-treaters may not pay attention to cars and cross mid-block or between parked cars.

* Slow down. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, a pedestrian is more than twice as likely to be killed if they are hit by a car traveling at 35 mph compared to 25 mph. What seems like a small difference-just 10 mph-can be the difference between life and death.

* Drive sober. Always designate a driver if you plan to drink.

Simple steps for parents to help keep trick-or-treaters safe:

* Check costumes. Choose disguises that do not obstruct vision, opt for non-toxic face paint instead of masks, and add reflective material or tape to keep kids visible.

* Trick-or-Treat together. AAA recommends that parents accompany young trick-or-treaters.

* Make a plan. Review trick-or-treat safety precautions and plan your route ahead of time. Remind children never to cross the street mid-block or from between parked cars.

* Buckle up. If driving trick-or-treaters between neighborhoods, always use appropriate seat belts or car seats and have children exit and enter on the passenger side of the vehicle.

Free Fall Leaf Pickup

The City of Darien Free Fall Leaf Pickup runs thru November 29, on your normal garbage day.   Leaves should be placed in brown kraft yard waste bags or in plastic garbage cans.  If garbage cans are used they must have a permanent "YARD WASTE ONLY" label attached to the front of the can so the driver can identify it as leaf pickup.  These labels are available free of charge at city hall.  Residents are not permitted to rake leaves into the street. Raking leaves into the street can cause serious local flooding for you and your neighbors. Regular yardwaste must still be tagged with a refuse sticker.  For more information please call 630-852-5000.

Brush Drop Off at Public Works Facility

The City of Darien brush pickup has ended for 2013.  You may still drop any leftover brush at our Public Works Facility at 1041 S. Frontage Road.  Brush only may be dropped off.  Please do not bring leaves, grass clippings or yardwaste.  For more information please call 630-353-8105.

Utility Scammers Active in Texas Recently Spotted in Illinois

Scammers in Texas employing a disconnection payment dodge to scam customers out of money are increasingly threatening victims in Illinois with disconnection by using the name of a local utility (ComEd).

Under the disconnection scam, scammers call customers and threaten customers with disconnection of utility service unless they receive immediate payment, typically through some untraceable, non-refundable method, including Visa or other prepaid cards, PayPal, and/or wire transfers. Since the scammers must threaten disconnection, the earliest examples of these scams have used ComEd's name in threatening the customer.

If you get such a call you should hang up and place a call directly to ComEd to confirm the disconnection.

Should additional questions arise, you can always call NIMEC at 1-800-727-3820.

Residential Burglaries & Burglary Tip Line

The City of Darien has experienced a recent increase in residential burglaries.  The Police Department is encouraging residents to dial 911 if they notice anything suspicious in your neighborhood. This can include vehicles that do not look familiar to the neighborhood or suspicious people walking around.

The Darien Police Department has created an e-mail tip line for anyone to forward a tip on the recent residential burglaries occurring in and around Darien.

The e-mail is:

catchaburglar@darienil.gov

We are seeking the communities input with any information they may hear about. This can include observing a suspicious person or vehicle in the neighborhood, someone knocking on homeowners doors with suspicious conversations such as asking about addresses or names of people who do not live at the house. Students are another good source of information. Students may hear about a recent crime while at school. This would be information the Darien Police would like to hear about.

This tip line is not monitored 24-hours. If you have a police related matter, wish to talk to an officer, or have a crime in progress, DIAL 911.

In addition to the new e-mail tip line, the Darien Police has a phone tip line which messages can be left on voicemail. This number is 630-353-8150.

We look forward to working with our residents to keep our community safe.

Helpful Information on Coyotes

The DuPage County Forest Preserve District website contains useful information about Coyotes. Some general information appears below and more can be found on the Forest Preserve Website

Coyotes are extremely adaptable and are able to survive in different habitats, including suburban neighborhoods. They prefer to be as far from humans as possible, but as with other species, a loss of habitat has left them few choices. To prevent problems in your yard, eliminate opportunities for them to obtain food or shelter. Do not encourage coyotes by feeding them. Attacks on humans are rare. It is worth noting that there has not been one documented case of a coyote biting a human in DuPage County whereas roughly 900 people are bitten by domestic dogs in DuPage each year.

OTHER GOVERNMENT NEWS AND EVENTS
Cass School District 63 "Those Who Excel" Recipients

Cass School District 63 Officials are extremely proud to share that two staff members were amongst approximately 200 statewide educators that were recognized this past weekend by the Illinois State Board of Education at the 2013/14 "Those Who Excel" awards' banquet in Bloomington-Normal, Illinois.

This was the Illinois State Board of Education's 39th statewide salute to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to Education in Illinois. Mrs. Susan Paszkowski and Mrs. Sandy Ruby are the first ever Cass School District 63 "Those Who Excel" recipients.

Mrs. Susan Paszkowski has taught at Cass Junior High School for the past 13 years. As a teacher of Science and Math, Mrs. Paszkowski brings her lessons alive with a real-life purpose for each of her students each and every day. In addition, she has helped shape a responsible "green" attitude for students, staff and school families, with her continuous school-wide recycling initiatives.

Mrs. Sandy Ruby was an extremely supportive and active parent, including leadership roles in school parent organizations when her own children attended the schools of Cass School District 63. After her children moved on from elementary school, Mrs. Ruby began to intensify her volunteer services in the area of English Language Learners at Concord Elementary School. For the past 14 years she has volunteered to service students, whose first language is not English.

Mrs. Paszkowski and Mrs. Ruby were nominated and supported last winter and spring through the rigorous "Those Who Excel" process by colleagues, parents and students and they are both truly humbled by this statewide recognition and very proud of the recognition this has brought to the entire Cass School District 63 community.
