2013 Brush Pickup

The next & last brush pickup for the 2013 will be:

October  21 through 25

The City of Darien is pleased to be able to offer FREE BRUSH PICKUP for all residents within city boundaries.  To help keep the streets clean and our crews on schedule, please stack the brush neatly by the curb on the Sunday before the pickup week.  The chipper can accept brush up to 6" in diameter.  Please do not tie the brush or put it in garbage cans.  All other yard waste such as grass clippings and flowers should be disposed of through our yard waste program with Veolia Environmental Services.

All brush needs to be out by no later than the Sunday night prior to the designated pick up week. The chipping crew will make only one pass and may complete your street as soon as Monday morning

Residents can also take take their brush to the Municipal Services Facility, located at 1041 S. Frontage Road, and place at the designated location, labeled as "Brush". Brush will be accepted seven days a week from 5:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. Landscape companies hired to help with your brush may also take the brush to Municipal Services.

If you are unable to locate a landscape contractor to help with your brush, please call Ashley in Municipal Services at 630-353-8105 for a list of companies that have done work in Darien.

Free Fall Leaf Pickup Begins October 7

The City of Darien Free Fall Leaf Pickup begins Monday, October 7, and runs thru November 29, on your normal garbage day.   Leaves should be placed in brown kraft yard waste bags or in plastic garbage cans.  If garbage cans are used they must have a permanent "YARD WASTE ONLY" label attached to the front of the can so the driver can identify it as leaf pickup.  These labels are available free of charge at city hall.  Residents are not permitted to rake leaves into the street. Raking leaves into the street can cause serious local flooding for you and your neighbors. For more information please call 630-852-5000.

Skunk Control Information

Occasional skunk sightings in a neighborhood need not be cause for alarm. Preventative measures such as covering garbage cans and not leaving pet food out will help discourage their presence. Also, covering openings under patios, porches, and crawl spaces will prevent occupancy. Always make sure no animal is denning there first.

If a skunk wanders into your garage, don't panic. Just open the garage door before dusk, and wait until the skunk exits for nightly foraging. Sprinkle a wide band of white flour across the threshold, so you can see evidence of exiting footprints. For obvious reasons, keep all domestic animals away from the area. Once the visitor has left, close the door and make sure it stays closed.

Although people's initial reaction may be to get rid of skunks, trapping will not solve the problem, because skunks from the surrounding area will quickly replace those removed. As long as an inviting habitat (brush or rock piles, elevated sheds, and openings under porches or house foundations) exists, skunks will use it. Trapping merely creates turnover in the population; in springtime, this can result in orphaned, starving skunks wandering around neighborhoods.
