Local High School Student Could Win a $30,000 Scholarship & a Trip to Washington DC |
Commander Matt Goodwin of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2838 in Darien announced the kick-off of this year's Voice of Democracy Scholarship Competition. The contest is open to all high school students in grades 9 through 12 including home schooled students.
Students participate by writing and then recording a three to five minute audio essay expressing their views on this year's topic, "Why I am Optimistic About our Nation's Future." Students' recordings (CDs or cassette tapes) are first judged at the post level with winning recordings advanced for judging at district, state, and national levels. Monetary awards are given at each level. The top winner in each state earns a free trip to Washington DC and the first place winner in the national competition receives a $30,000 scholarship plus the awards issued at the post, district, and state levels.
Student entries including the recording, typed copy of the essay, and a completed application form are due to our post by November 1. For complete information regarding this exciting competition, please contact our post Voice of Democracy chairman Earl McMahon at 630-963-3858 or check our web site at http://www.vfw.org/Community/Voice-of-Democracy/
This competition is sponsored by the VFW and its Ladies Auxiliary throughout the country and has attracted over 7 million participants in its 65 year history. The members of Darien Memorial Post 2838 are pleased to offer this opportunity to the students in our community.
