Community Alert - Counterfeit Money used at Garage Sale

The Darien Police has received a report from a resident who received a counterfeit $50 bill. On June 28, 2013, a resident was holding a garage sale in the 9000 block of Brandon. The resident reported that two African-American individuals purchased an item for $8 and paid with a counterfeit $50 bill, receiving $42 in legitimate money. One individual was described as 30's in age,  5'05 in height and heavy set. The other individual was 30's in age, tall and average weight. The individuals left in a red vehicle.

The Darien Police has been in contact with the Riverside Police who have received a similar report in their jurisdiction on July 20th. We are sharing investigative leads between each department.

We would encourage residents to be aware of the recent scams and scrutinize larger bills being used for payment. If multiple bills are being used for payment, check to see that the serial numbers are not the same. Newer bills have watermarks and a security strip. Additional information on security features on U.S. Currency can be obtained from the Secret Service web site at http://www.newmoney.gov/.

If you suspect you have received a counterfeit bill, contact the Darien Police by calling 911. Provide as much information on vehicle or description of individuals, including direction of travel to the police dispatcher. We do not want residents to detain individuals or get into an altercation.

We wish our residents continued success with your garage sales. Please contact the Police Department or Darien City Hall if you have additional questions on garage sales or permit requirements.

Chase Bank Construction to Begin

Chase has announced they will begin construction on the site at 75th Street and Cass on August 26th and expect the new branch to open for business in March.  This site was originally purchased by the City of Darien in 2004 as part of a plan to facilitate the redevelopment of the property on Cass Avenue between 75th Street and Plainfield Road. The City purchased it for $1.6 million and sold it last year for $1.95 million.  This economic development project will clean up the unsightly property and help the city in its efforts to redevelop the remaining property on the South.  The City is excited to welcome Chase into the community and hope residents are pleased with the new improvements on this busy intersection.

Fire Hydrant Painting

The City of Darien will begin Fire Hydrant Painting beginning the week of July 29 through August 30. The awarded vendor, DMD Consultants will be sandblasting, priming and painting 480 fire hydrants. The limits for this year's program are:  Routet 83 to Fairview Avenue, and 67th Street to 75th Street.

Darien Police Department Crime Tip Hotline

HELP KEEP YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD AND COMMUNITY SAFE

Crime prevention is best achieved through a partnership between the public and police. Professional law enforcement officers must work hand-in-hand with the public to fight crime and maintain Darien as a safe community. The police rely on your assistance in reporting crime related information. The following Police tip line is provided for your use and convenience:

Police Crime Tip Hotline 630-353-8150

The crime tip hotline should be used to provide information on crimes that have already occurred or to give crime information anonymously. For all crimes that are in-progress or where you would like to talk to the police, DIAL 911. The tip line is not a replacement for 911. While it is not a requirement for you to leave your name, we may need additional information. Confidentiality will be maintained with all calls. Darien Police Chief Ernest Brown looks forward to working with the community in keeping it "A Nice Place to Live".

DuPage County Warns Residents to Avoid Contact with Bats!

DUPAGE COUNTY-The DuPage County Health Department warns county residents to avoid contact with bats as we approach the time of year when bats are the most active.  It's important to remember that you should never try to approach or catch a bat, or any wild animal, especially in your home.

Bats are the primary carriers of rabies in Illinois. You cannot tell by looking at a bat if it is rabid.  The animal does not have to be aggressive or exhibit other symptoms to have rabies. Any wild mammal, such as a raccoon, skunk, fox, coyote or bat, can have rabies and transmit it to humans.

Changes in any animal's normal behavior, such as difficulty walking or an overall appearance of illness, can be early signs of rabies.  A bat that is active during the day, found on the ground and unable to fly, is more likely to be rabid.  Such bats should never be handled.

Rabies is a virus that affects the nervous system of humans and other mammals.  Humans can get rabies after being bitten by an infected animal.  Rabies can also be contracted when saliva from a rabid animal gets directly into the eyes, nose, mouth or a wound.  Without preventive treatment, rabies is a fatal disease.  If you have been bitten or exposed to a bat, seek immediate medical attention.  Bat bites may not be felt while sleeping, and special consideration also needs to be taken when a bat is found in a child's room or in a disabled person's living area. Preventive treatment with rabies immune globulin and a vaccine series must begin immediately.

One bat has tested positive in DuPage County so far this year.  Preventive treatment has been recommended for thirteen potentially exposed persons.

The following tips can help prevent the spread of rabies:

*Be a responsible pet owner.  Keep vaccinations up-to-date for all pets.

*Seek immediate veterinary assistance if your pet is bitten by a wild animal or exposed to a bat.

*Call your local police department or your local animal control agency to remove stray animals from your neighborhood.

*Do not handle, feed or attract wild animals with open garbage cans or litter.

*Never adopt wild animals or bring them into your home.  Do not try to nurse sick animals to health.  Call animal control or an animal rescue agency for assistance.

*Teach children never to handle unfamiliar animals, wild or domestic, even if they appear friendly.  "Love your own, leave other animals alone" is a good principle for children to learn to reduce the risk of exposures to rabid animals.

*Maintain homes and other buildings so bats cannot gain entry.

*If a bat is in your home, do not release the bat outdoors until after speaking with animal control or public health officials.  If you are able to do so without putting yourself at risk for physical contact or being bitten, try to cover the bat with a large can or bucket, and close the door to the room.

All animal bites to humans that occur in DuPage County must be reported to DuPage County Animal Care and Control at (630) 407-2800; fax reports to (630) 407-2801.  All potential rabies exposures must be reported to the DuPage County Health Department at (630) 221-7553.

DuPage County "Fight the Bite" Protect Yourself Against West Nile Virus

The DuPage County Health Department would like to bring to your attention a groundbreaking alert system we have launched that will educate the public about the potential risk of contracting West Nile virus (WNV).

This alert system, known as the Personal Protection Index (PPI) is part of our aggressive public health education campaign targeted toward WNV prevention. The PPI will alert residents of WNV risk level and advise them of the precautions they should take to protect themselves and their loved ones.

The PPI will be updated every Wednesday at 3:00 p.m., by Health Department staff, during the surveillance season.  The PPI will change to match the risk level determined for that period.

When activated, residents should follow the 4 D's of prevention that coincide with the PPI risk level.

·        Drain:  Drain those items that collect standing water around your home, yard or business.  Scrub and refill pet water dishes and bird baths regularly.

·         Defend:  Use an insect repellent containing DEET when outdoors and reapply according to directions.

·         Dress:  Wear long pants, long sleeves and closed toe shoes when outside to cover the skin.

·         Dusk & Dawn:   Wear repellent outdoors during these prime times for mosquito activity.
