CITY NEWS
Firearm Concealed Carry Act

The State of Illinois passed HB 183, the "Firearm Concealed Carry Act" on July 9, 2013.  One aspect of this law requires a municipality to pass an ordinance regulating assault weapons or lose the ability to regulate assault weapons in the future.

This will be considered by the City Council at the July 15, 2013 City Council Meeting.  The entire agenda, including memos and ordinances, can be found here.

If you have any questions, please contact Assistant City Administrator Scott Coren at (630) 353-8104.

Community Alert - Residential Burglaries

The Darien Police Department has responded to three residential burglaries in July. Two reports have been taken in the 8500 block and the 8700 block of Carriage Greens Drive.  The other report was taken in the 1600 block of Darien Club Drive.

The incidents range in times from late morning to early afternoon, and late evening. No residents were home for any of the incidents. Specific information about methods of entry, dates and times are being withheld due to the ongoing police investigation.

We would encourage residents to follow good security practices including making sure doors and windows are locked before leaving, adding timers to interior lights that can be set to turn on as evening lighting diminishes, and leaving exterior porch and garage lights on to deter potential criminals.

The Darien Police would also encourage residents to dial 911 if they notice anything suspicious in your neighborhood. This can include vehicles that do not look familiar to the neighborhood or suspicious people walking around. Suspicious individuals may come to your door and ring doorbell or knock on door to see if you are home. If you answer the door, the individual will have some story such as looking for a person who does not live there, to asking for directions to another street, or soliciting business. These are the types of suspicious activity that the Darien Police Department would want to receive immediate notice on.

We are committed to working with and on behalf of the residents to keep Darien a safe community.

Vacation Tips for Home Safety

If you want to keep you home safe while away on vacation, the Darien Police Department offers the following tips to prevent any unwanted intrusions and thefts:
  • The #1 prevention tip is to make your house look "lived in" when you're away. This means not letting items pile up in the mailbox or on the porch. It sends the message that no one is home or watching the residence.
  • Arrange to have a trusted neighbor pick up your mail, newspapers and garbage cans. They live in your neighborhood and know what looks suspicious in the area.
  • Make arrangements with trusted friends, neighbors or family to shovel the driveway and maintain the property.
  • Set automatic timers for interior and exterior lights, radio and TVs. Turn the ringer down on the phone. A ringing phone alerts others that no one is home.
  • Leave your window shades in a "normal" position, or have your house watcher or housesitter move the window shade positioning throughout your vacation or your time away from home. Never close the blinds.
  • Lock your valuables in a safe deposit box or fire safe. Document all valuables via videotape and place this and important serial numbers in a safe deposit box as well.
  • Notify the police department and request a "Vacation Watch."
  • Lock all ladders, lawn supplies, etc., in the shed or garage and make sure your garage is secured at all times.
  • Take your garage door openers out of your vehicles. Remove important papers and documents with personal information on them. Have vehicles moved on occasion, so as to not be parked in one spot all the time.
  • Make sure your burglar and fire alarms are in working condition. Test them with the alarm company and make sure your alarm company has an updated call list.
  • Secure your windows by "pinning" them and place a security bar in the track of your sliding glass doors.
  • Leave emergency contact information with the police or a trusted neighbor.
  • If you see a suspicious person or vehicle please don't hesitate to notify the police by calling 911.
  • Please close and lock your garage doors and any external doors.

Recent home burglaries in neighboring towns involved an unlocked window or door that the offender used to get inside the house.

Darien Police Department Crime Tip Hotline

HELP KEEP YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD AND COMMUNITY SAFE

Crime prevention is best achieved through a partnership between the public and police. Professional law enforcement officers must work hand-in-hand with the public to fight crime and maintain Darien as a safe community. The police rely on your assistance in reporting crime related information. The following Police tip line is provided for your use and convenience:

Police Crime Tip Hotline 630-353-8150

The crime tip hotline should be used to provide information on crimes that have already occurred or to give crime information anonymously. For all crimes that are in-progress or where you would like to talk to the police, DIAL 911. The tip line is not a replacement for 911. While it is not a requirement for you to leave your name, we may need additional information. Confidentiality will be maintained with all calls. Darien Police Chief Ernest Brown looks forward to working with the community in keeping it "A Nice Place to Live".

Common Core State Standards Parent & Community Information Sessions

Please join us for our Parent & Community Information Sessions related to the new Common Core State Standards! The same presentation will be given on three different dates this summer.

The sessions will be held at Lakeview Jr. High School on Wednesday, July 17 and Thursday, August 1, from 7:00-8:00 p.m.

This past school year, teachers and staff spent a significant amount of time participating in professional development and curriculum writing activities related to the new Common Core State Standards. • Why the Common Core?
  • Research and Data
  • Design and Process
  • Key Shifts for English/Language Arts
  • Key Shifts for Mathematics
