Play it Safe - Never Donate Money Based on a Phone Solicitation! |
The City of Darien has received complaints from residents regarding telephone solicitations of money where the caller implies some affiliation with the Darien Police Department. The City of Darien is not affiliated in any way with these organizations. Citizens should be aware that most telephone solicitations are not made by the actual organization itself, but are contracted out to a professional fund raising company. As their compensation, professional fund-raisers often charge 80 to 90% of your contribution as a fee.
The service you receive from the Darien police Department will never be affected based on your choice not to contribute to a phone solicitor claiming to represent the police department or police union. The advice from the city is to never donate any money based on a phone solicitation.
If you have questions please contact City Administrator, Bryon Vana, at 630-353-8114.
Some Facts About Police and Firefighter Solicitations
Some police and firefighter organizations are not charitable but instead are unions or social groups that will not use your donation for charitable purposes.* Police officers and firefighters never know you contributed
Any coercive statement, direct or subtle, that infers that giving is a way to get better protection or special treatment is a crime and should be reported to the respective police department, the State's Attorney and the Attorney General's office.
Having the words "police" or "firefighter" in an organization's name does not mean police or firefighters are members of the group.
Paid professional fund-raisers make most of the solicitations for police and firefighter organizations. Professional fund-raisers often charge 80 to 90% of your contribution as a fee. |

Darien Police Department Crime Tip Hotline |
HELP KEEP YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD AND COMMUNITY SAFE
Crime prevention is best achieved through a partnership between the public and police. Professional law enforcement officers must work hand-in-hand with the public to fight crime and maintain Darien as a safe community. The police rely on your assistance in reporting crime related information. The following Police tip line is provided for your use and convenience:
Police Crime Tip Hotline 630-353-8150
The crime tip hotline should be used to provide information on crimes that have already occurred or to give crime information anonymously. For all crimes that are in-progress or where you would like to talk to the police, DIAL 911. The tip line is not a replacement for 911. While it is not a requirement for you to leave your name, we may need additional information. Confidentiality will be maintained with all calls. Darien Police Chief Ernest Brown looks forward to working with the community in keeping it "A Nice Place to Live". |

Heavy storms in the Chicagoland area have produced saturated soil conditions which creates a concern for nuisance mosquitoes in the area, despite the comprehensive mosquito abatement program run by the City of Darien through Clarke Mosquito Control. As temperatures begin to rise, you may see an increase in the mosquito population. We ask that you assist the City of Darien and your neighbors in reducing the mosquito population:
- Reporting standing water areas on public property, especially backyard catchbasins, to Clarke Mosquito at 800-942-2555. The City of Darien treats storm inlets on streets, ditches, retention and detention basins, and areas that generally hold stormwater areas, but if you identify a new spot we would like to get it included on our lists.
- Getting rid of old tires, buckets, bottles or any items in your yard that may hold water
- Changing the water in birdbaths, watering cans, plant pots and drip trays no less frequently than once per week
- Keep grass cut short and shrubbery well trimmed around the house so adult mosquitoes will not hide there
Even with all these steps, there still may be mosquitoes in the area, as they have the ability to fly many miles. When you are out in your yard, we would recommend wearing clothing to cover skin when possible or using a mosquito repellent. |

Common Core State Standards Parent & Community Information Sessions |
Please join us for our Parent & Community Information Sessions related to the new Common Core State Standards! The same presentation will be given on three different dates this summer.
The sessions will be held at Lakeview Jr. High School on Tuesday, June 18; Wednesday, July 17; and Thursday, August 1, from 7:00-8:00 p.m.
This past school year, teachers and staff spent a significant amount of time participating in professional development and curriculum writing activities related to the new Common Core State Standards. These standards will drive instruction for our students K-12. We believe an important next step is to help our parents and community members to have a deeper understanding of the Common Core Standards. The agenda for each of these informational sessions will include:
- Why the Common Core?
- Research and Data
- Design and Process
- Key Shifts for English/Language Arts
- Key Shifts for Mathematics
- Course Sequence and alignment
- PARCC Assessment Timeline
- Parent Resources Q & A
It's our goal to make sure our Center Cass parents and community members are well informed about what's going on in our schools. We hope to see you at one of our summer sessions. |
