Darien Police Department Crime Tip Hotline

HELP KEEP YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD AND COMMUNITY SAFE

Crime prevention is best achieved through a partnership between the public and police. Professional law enforcement officers must work hand-in-hand with the public to fight crime and maintain Darien as a safe community. The police rely on your assistance in reporting crime related information. The following Police tip line is provided for your use and convenience:

Police Crime Tip Hotline 630-353-8150

The crime tip hotline should be used to provide information on crimes that have already occurred or to give crime information anonymously. For all crimes that are in-progress or where you would like to talk to the police, DIAL 911. The tip line is not a replacement for 911. While it is not a requirement for you to leave your name, we may need additional information. Confidentiality will be maintained with all calls. Darien Police Chief Ernest Brown looks forward to working with the community in keeping it "A Nice Place to Live".

2013 Brush Pickup Schedule

2013 remaining brush pickup dates are:

June  24 through 28
August  26 through 30
October  21 through 25

The City of Darien is pleased to be able to offer FREE BRUSH PICKUP for all residents within city boundaries.  To help keep the streets clean and our crews on schedule, please stack the brush neatly by the curb on the Sunday before the pickup week.  The chipper can accept brush up to 6" in diameter.  Please do not tie the brush or put it in garbage cans.  All other yard waste such as grass clippings and flowers should be disposed of through our yard waste program with Veolia Environmental Services.

All brush needs to be out by no later than the Sunday night prior to the designated pick up week. The chipping crew will make only one pass and may complete your street as soon as Monday morning.

Residents who are unable to put their brush out prior to the scheduled week can take it to the Municipal Services Facility, located at 1041 S. Frontage Road, and place at the designated location, labeled as "Brush". Brush will be accepted Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. No landscape companies are allowed to dump at the facility.

If you have any questions regarding brush pick up, please contact Municipal Services at 630-353-8105.

Building Permit Fees Waived

At the March 18th, 2013 Council Meeting the City Council approved a resolution to waive certain building permit fees.  The goal is to encourage home improvements and provide a financial incentive to those residents that are planning home projects. A similar program was successfully initiated in 2001 & 2011. The proposal waives the building permit fee for residents and business/property owners. Permits must still be obtained, and fees paid to outside vendors necessary to ensure the safety of the project are still applicable. Below is an example of permits that will have permit fees waived now thru December, 2013.  For more information please call the Building Department at 630-353-8115.

Emerald Ash Borer Treatment

The City of Darien has recently received competitive quotes for the treatment of the Emerald Ash Borer located on private property. The recommended vendor is Tree and Turf Professionals. The treatment method consists of a licensed applicator injecting the tree with the product Treeage.  For additional information regarding the treatment and general information please visit the following website: www.arborjet.com

The tree would be drilled with a small hole(s) and larger trees will require multiple holes based on the diameter of the tree. The Treeage product is injected based on the tree diameter and sealed with a plug(s).  The application is good for up to two years. The Ash tree must have a minimal 60% healthy canopy to be a candidate for the treatment. The Tree and Turf Professionals shall review each Ash tree prior to treatment. All payments shall be the responsibility of the homeowner. The contact person for Tree and Turf Professionals is Lyle McGinn at 630-759-7389 or email at lmcginn@treeandturf.com

The measurement for a tree is determined by the diameter. If you would like to determine the measurement of your tree take an inch tape measure and measure approximately 4-foot up from the base of the tree and around the tree. This will be your circumference. You can then go to their website

Insert the unit number in the Circumference box and move the pointer to the Solve Others box and hit Enter. The calculator will provide the Diameter. Below is the pricing schedule for the treatment.

Common Core State Standards Parent & Community Information Sessions

Please join us for our Parent & Community Information Sessions related to the new Common Core State Standards! The same presentation will be given on three different dates this summer.

The sessions will be held at Lakeview Jr. High School on Tuesday, June 18; Wednesday, July 17; and Thursday, August 1, from 7:00-8:00 p.m.

This past school year, teachers and staff spent a significant amount of time participating in professional development and curriculum writing activities related to the new Common Core State Standards. We believe an important next step is to help our parents and community members to have a deeper understanding of the Common Core Standards.

The agenda for each of these informational sessions will include:

  • Why the Common Core?
  • Research and Data
  • Design and Process
  • Key Shifts for English/Language Arts
  • Key Shifts for Mathematics
  • Course Sequence and alignment
  • PARCC Assessment Timeline
  • Parent Resources       Q & A

It's our goal to make sure our Center Cass parents and community members are well informed about what's going on in our schools.  We hope to see you at one of our summer sessions.

Youngsters are invited to express what they like about their community and the good old USA by decorating their bikes and entering them in the Parade.  Parade Chairman Mark Lewis stressed that kids will have free rein.  " There are no rules.  We just want to  encourage kids to get involved and have some fun in the Parade," he said.   Trophies will be awarded by the Lions Club for the best-decorated boys' and girls' bicycles.
