The Darien Police Department received seven reports on Saturday, May 18, where residents received an automated phone call to their home phone. The call reports that their debit card was identified as having fraudulent activity and that the card has been suspended. The resident is then asked to press buttons on the phone to begin the reactivation. If the resident goes through the prompts, they will have given out their bank account and PIN number. The thieves will then withdraw money from their bank account. We are not aware of any loss at the moment. We would encourage our residents to remain vigilant when receiving calls or e-mails asking for personal information. Banks and credit card companies do not ask for personal information. Residents should call their credit card company or bank if they suspect a scam. If you receive a phone call or e-mail like this, please call 911 to report it so the Darien Police Department can make a report.
What is phishing scam? Phishing is the act of attempting to acquire credit cards, passwords, or credit card information by pretending to be a legitimate business or company.
