CITY NEWS
Transparency - The Top Ten Ways Darien Provides Residents With Government Information and News
The City of Darien prides itself on transparency and promotes it in all city departments and governmental operations.  It is easy to get whatever information you need!  The top ten examples of this are:

1. Direct Connect : the city's electronic e-mail newsletter includes recent "hot topics" in government, upcoming events, and rotating information about City services.  It is sent out weekly to those individuals who have registered to receive it, and provides important and informative community information from the city and other local agencies. To sign up, go to Direct Connect

2. Website: The city's website is updated regularly and includes all the information the public needs to follow the activities of the city. The transparency tab on the web site takes you directly to a 10 point transparency checklist which is part of the government recommended web site information promoting transparency.

3. Cable Television: The City of Darien operates a cable station that broadcasts City Council meetings and local community news.  It can be found on Channel 6 if you use Comcast, or in the On-Demand section of AT&T U-Verse.

4. Youtube: If you don't subscribe to Comcast or U-Verse, you can find links to our meetings and community videos, downloaded to YouTube on our website, or you can go to YouTube and type "Darien Cable Channel" into the search box.

5. Facebook:  More people are using social media to connect, and Darien is no different.  Type "City of Darien, Illinois" into the search box on Facebook and "Like" our page to get updates.

6. Neighbors Magazine: For residents that still prefer a paper newsletter, our bi-monthly Neighbors offering comes in the mail to every Darien resident, and contains useful articles and content.

7. Police Chief's monthly Newsletter and crime mapping web site:  Chief Brown has implemented a monthly newsletter and a crime mapping website that allows Darien residents to follow and understand the way our department combats crime in the community, and informs the community about concerns in the community.  This is available on our website, and is actively sent to residents in our Direct Connect e-mail.

8. Freedom of Information Act: The City of Darien happily and expeditiously provides city documents to those requesting information.  Want a document from City Hall?  Just ask!

9. Availability of Staff and Elected Officials:  City Staff and Elected Officials all have telephone numbers and e-mails on our website, allowing for easy and responsive contact.  City Staff is hired by your City Council to help guide you with your questions - let us know how we can help!

10. Notice postings on bulletin boards and in the newspaper: Each year the City of Darien takes out space in local papers and posts on bulletin boards at City Hall to advertise upcoming bids for projects, employee salary ranges, notices on budget hearings, and upcoming meetings.

As you can see, any resident that wants information in Darien has many ways to obtain it. Still have questions?  Let us know!  City Administrator Bryon Vana is available for residents.  Please call his direct line at (630) 353-8114 with any questions or concerns.

Building Permit Fees Waived

At the March 18th, 2013 Council Meeting the City Council approved a resolution to waive certain building permit fees.  The goal is to encourage home improvements and provide a financial incentive to those residents that are planning home projects. A similar program was successfully initiated in 2001 & 2011. The proposal waives the building permit fee for residents and business/property owners. Permits must still be obtained, and fees paid to outside vendors necessary to ensure the safety of the project are still applicable. Below is an example of permits that will have permit fees waived now thru December, 2013.  For more information please call the Building Department at 630-353-8115.

Emerald Ash Borer Property Treatment

The City of Darien has recently received competitive quotes for the treatment of the Emerald Ash Borer located on private property. The recommended vendor is Tree and Turf Professionals. The treatment method consists of a licensed applicator injecting the tree with the product Treeage.  For additional information regarding the treatment and general information please visit the following website: www.arborjet.com

The tree would be drilled with a small hole(s) and larger trees will require multiple holes based on the diameter of the tree. The Treeage product is injected based on the tree diameter and sealed with a plug(s).  The application is good for up to two years. The Ash tree must have a minimal 60% healthy canopy to be a candidate for the treatment. The Tree and Turf Professionals shall review each Ash tree prior to treatment. All payments shall be the responsibility of the homeowner. The contact person for Tree and Turf Professionals is Lyle McGinn at 630-759-7389 or email at lmcginn@treeandturf.com

The measurement for a tree is determined by the diameter. If you would like to determine the measurement of your tree take an inch tape measure and measure approximately 4-foot up from the base of the tree and around the tree. This will be your circumference. You can then go to their website

Insert the unit number in the Circumference box and move the pointer to the Solve Others box and hit Enter. The calculator will provide the Diameter. Below is the pricing schedule for the treatment.

Dog Waste Ordinance

The city receives numerous complaints about dog owners not picking up their pets waste.  City ordinance requires that dog waste be picked up by its owners.  Please be considerate of your neighbor's property and pick up all dog waste.  The City thanks you for keeping Darien a Nice Place to Live.
