Building rapport
To get prepared for a meeting with someone you don't know, of course you will do some Internet research. But what about also gathering info by making a few phone calls or having face-to-face conversations with 2 or 3 people you already know? In addition to offering you a unique opportunity to practice your "small talk or elevator pitch" in a brief "can you help me" conversation with a member of your network (be it by phone or visiting a colleague on another floor) you may find out (as one of my clients recently did) that they know the person you are about to meet and will ask you to be sure and say hi for them--turning building rapport into building a connection.
