Keeping promises
"Over-promise and under-deliver" is a common sales mantra; it helps to exceed someone's expectations, demonstrate reliability, and seldom disappoints the recipient. Common networking promises such as "I'll get back to you shortly"; "let's do lunch soon"; "I'll be there early" show good intentions and a willingness to do something--and probably we do "get around to" delivering on it, eventually. But because we are all human, our vague promises to extend help or connect with our network often fall to the end of a long work-life to do list. When this happens, we miss opportunities to strengthen relationships and build our reputation as a "go to" resource.
