What was I thinking?
When I was just starting my consulting practice (I still remember it, 20 years later) I thought I was really "lucky" to have received a referral to a potential client organization. But from the start of my conversation with the person it was suggested I call, it just didn't seem right. Their need was different from what I expected, and when I gave the name of my referral source, she said, "Oh, I don't really recall her; how did she say we knew each other?" That was an aha! moment-- yes, it is a privilege to get a referral, but it also carries a responsibility-- ours to be sure the referral source is "known.''
