How can you be ready at your next career crossroads?
Peter Drucker said successful careers develop when "people are prepared for opportunities because they know their strengths, their method of work, and their values" (see March 25 daily tip). I would add that success includes occasionally taking time to look ahead at your work-life 5, 10, 20 years from now and, using these questions, sketch out a map of future possibilities:
- Which area of the business would you like to be in or to run?
- What level and title of positions in those areas interest you most?
- What new skills will you need?
- What current responsibilities and tasks can another person in your company (or member of your team) take over, freeing you up to develop the new skills or gain new experiences?
- Where do you need to build and expand visibility and credibility within and outside your organization?
Looking ahead allows you to define success in your personal and professional life.
