Lessons from 1966
Creating Simple E- Learning for your players, coaches and parents using TedEd
I have created some very basic e-learning lessons using some videos I recently unearthed some old coaching films made by Charles Hughes the then Assistant Director of Coaching of the English Football of Association in the late 1960's based on the games in 1966 World Cup staged in England. Charles was one of the first creators of Coaching Films and went on to develop two further series of Coaching Videos in 1979 and 1990. He was I believe the first to use Match Action to illustrate points. The films were in conjunction with a very popular book Charles wrote ' Tactics and Teamwork ' I have used clips from the tenth film made from 1966 which was ' Attacking at Set Plays ' . The online ' lessons ' have been created using TedEd (http://ed.ted.com/) - 'lessons ' is the word used by TedEd for this content creattion
Maybe the game has moved on since 1966 but you can make your own mind up on that after viewing these short ' lessons'
Why use TedEd ?
- Its Free !
- You must start with a video clip ( a good idea to 'hook' learners in from the start !) You need to be using a clip from YouTube or a source that could provide the link. Your chosen video could be one on YouTube already or you could shoot and upload your own video
- It's INTERACTIVE ! ....You can create a lesson starting with a video and then follow it with questions, guide to further resources and discussion
- You can have up to 15 questions - as multi choice or open ended
- Once created you can share the link for your lesson via email or embed it into your blog,Facebook page or twitter account
- You can restrict who sees your lesson
- As a Google product it works very well with Google +
How best to use TedEd
- Start an account
- Click on Start a Lesson
- Provide the url link to the video of your choice
- Once TedEd has it click on the video and then click ' Continue '
- Follow the instructions
We would really encourage you to have a go at creating some e-learning content for your Players, Coaches or Parents using TedEd- it really is very simple !
NB ......For younger viewers it may be worthwhile pointing out that in the 1960's the following thinking was the norm for set plays :
- The idea that the field of play would be sub divided into thirds ( defending, middle and attacking ) was new and actually first used by Charles Hughes in the book that accompanied these films 'Tactics and Teamwork '. - Set Plays were looked primarily as a means to get the ball back in play or re-start the game : not seen as a major tactical advantage. Not many teams practiced set plays in the 60's !
- Defenders were supposed to defend at set plays and attackers attack at set plays. The idea ( outlined in these films ) that defenders would move up to the opposing penalty area to play as attackers for corner kicks and throw ins was new ,as was attackers coming back to defend at set plays !
- Goalkeepers were not as protected as they are now !
It's also worth pointing out that most BBC commentaries in the 1960's had to adopt the accents Charles adopted to narrate these films !!
