Sikeston Library Proposed Children's Facilities
Vision 2013 - Sikeston Public Library
Basement renovation for children's programming facilities

Existing Library facilities are no longer large enough to serve the more than 8,723 children (ages 2-17) that enjoy the Library's 246 programs. Acknowledging the benefit of this programming to local youth and the future of our community, the Library Board is seeking contributions to renovate the Library's lower level creating a designated children's program area, and freeing the McAmis Community Room for other public needs.

In a project slated to cost between $475,000 to $495,000, the Board will renovate the Library basement creating 800-square feet of programing space, update equipment and technology for children's programming and public meetings, and refurbish the existing kitchen area.  To comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act, an elevator and ramp will be installed.  Restrooms will be upgraded for handicapped accessibility.

The Board has committed $150,000 to this project and is asking the community to contribute the remainder of the funds. For more information about the project and make contributions, contact the Library at 573-471-4140 or by email at info@sikeston.lib.mo.us.  All donations are tax-deductible.

Trailblazers Walking Clubs Resume Activities
Jr. Trailblazers meet March 5; Trailblazers meet March 12
Following their winter break, the Trailblazers Walking Clubs will resume activity.  Sponsored by the Scott County Health Department in cooperation with the Sikeston Parks Division, the walking clubs promote exercise -- walking, biking, jogging -- utilizing the multi-use trail in the Recreation Complex.
Jr. Trailblazers, designed for children ages 6-12, will meet March 5 at 6 PM in the Clinton Community Building, Sikeston Recreation Complex.  Membership is free and all participants will receive attendance rewards and healthy snacks. Meetings will be held the first Tuesday of each month, March through November.
Trailblazers adult walking club will hold their first meeting at 6 PM, March 12 at the Clinton Community Building, Sikeston Recreation Complex.  Trailblazers coordinator, Brenda Freed, health educator with the Scott County Healthy Department explains each Trailblazers member will be given a log book to record his/her exercise activity between monthly meetings with a goal for every participant to exercise at least 30 minutes a day, three days a week.
Freed adds another goal of the Trailblazers is to promote a healthy lifestyle that includes exercise and good nutrition.  Freed will be offering tips for healthy recipes periodically at the monthly meetings.
The Trailblazers adult walking club meets at 6 PM on the second Tuesday of each month, March through November.
Funding for the Trailblazers and the trail was provided by the Missouri Foundation for Health.  The Foundation is a philanthropic organization whose vision is to improve the health of the people in the communities it serves.
For more information contact Brenda Freed, 471-4044 or Jiggs Moore, 475-3725.
Sikeston's Spring Curbside Clean-Up Campaign
Pickups begin March 11

Sikeston's Spring Curbside Clean Up Program provides residents an opportunity to dispose of bulky rubbish during their regular solid waste pick-up cycle. Residents with Monday and Thursday trash collection will have their curbside pick up on Monday, March 11 and Thursday, March 14.  Residents with Tuesday and Friday solid waste pick-up will have their curbside pick-up on Tuesday, March 19 and Friday, March 22.

Bulky items to be disposed of should be placed where normal household trash pick-up is made -- curb or alley.  No construction, contractor, commercial or business waste will be taken during this program.

Many items are now banned from Missouri landfills and must be handled separately. A $10 fee will be charged by the City's vendor, Sonny Solid Waste, to remove large household appliances, commodes, and kitchen or bathroom sinks  Commercial appliances, lead acid batteries, used motor oil and paints have special handling requirements and fees.  Call Sonny Solid Waste at 471-2869 to arrange for their removal.  Applicable fees must be paid in advance at the Sonny Solid Waste Office, 451 Smith Street.

For more detailed information about this program contact Jiggs Moore at 475-3725 or visit www.sikeston.org.

Youth in Government Day
Students Conduct Hearing on Litter Control Measures
Youth in Government Day Activities
Twenty-seven student leaders from Sikeston High School recently participated in the Sikeston Optimist Club's Youth in Government Day.  Conducted for over 25 years, this event pairs student leaders with elected municipal officials and managerial staff to learn about their community and civic leadership.
Students representing the City Council, BMU, public and staff discussed possible measures -- legislative and/or educational --  to reduce local litter problems.  This involved research into the behaviors and personality traits associated with frequent litterers, most common type of litter, and possible control measures. Students decided an educational campaign would be the most effective way of addressing this local problem.

Student participants included Jack Sutton, David Burch, Gavin O'Brien, William Hill, Zachary Harrison, Alana Ellis, Annie Ramey, Rachel Hopson, Harper Bryant, Nicholas Hoang, Jacob Johnson, Kalli Williams, Molly Uthoff, Madison Green, Abbey Jones, Kameron Wilcox, Kaleb Newton, Colton Black, Austin Dial, Tamora Wilson, Mary Maddox, Connor Underwood, Alexis Odom, Earl Madison, Natalie Stevens, Emily McClain and Molly Myers.  Crystie Ressel and Sarah McGill were faculty sponsors. Linda Lowes served as the City's liaison.  Financial sponsors for the event were Pullen Brothers Trucking, Standard Democrat, First Realty, and Holly Rehder, 148th District State Representative.
