Great Central US ShakeOut
Earthquake Preparedness Drill - 10:15 AM, February 7

Sikeston residents are urged to take part in the Great Central US ShakeOut.  This nine-state earthquake drill, being held Thursday, February 7 at 10:15 AM, teaches the principles of "Drop, Cover and Hold on".

At precisely 10:15 AM citizens are urged to DROP to the ground, take COVER under a sturdy desk or table, and HOLD ON to it until the shaking stops.

Now, is also a good time to review your family's communication plans and refresh your earthquake supplies. For additional information on how you can prepare for an earthquake emergency go to www.sema.dps.mo.gov/earthquake_preparedness

Annual Report on 2012 Municipal Operations
Now available on www.sikeston.org
Each year the City compiles an overview of the year's projects and accomplishments.  An overview is provided below.  The full report is available on the City's website, www.sikeston.org.  Readers will find it listed on the site's landing page under "More News."
Most notable in 2012, was the City's surge in new construction. Based on 2012 permit information, new construction had an estimated value of more than $62.8 million. This is a substantial increase over 2011 new construction which was valued at $21.5 million.
The 2012 construction numbers are composed of an estimated $52.8 in new commercial structures. Commercial additions and alterations amounted to an additional $3 million. New single-family home construction was valued at $3.4 million, two-family home construction was valuted at $1.6 million and multi-family construction was valuted at over $2 million.

On July 11, 2013 Do it Best, Inc. broke ground on a 550,000 square foot distribution center. The company plans to employ approximately 150 people.

In 2012 the City completed construction of a new public safety headquarters.

With a projected total cost of $5.1 million, this debt will be repaid over 30 years.

As part of an on-going program, the City purchased 2 new outdoor warning sirens in 2012. They were installed at the intersection of Main Street and Malone Avenue, and on Murray Lane at Branum. The City plans to purchase and install 2 additional sirens in 2013.

Transportation Sales Tax receipts funded the 2012 Street and Stormwater Drainage Improvement Program.  $706,221 was used for asphalt overlays, concrete reconstruction, street extensions, curb and gutter replacement and drainage improvements.

In 2012 the City and Scott County Health Department partnered to obtain a 3-year, $210,421 grant from the Missouri Foundation for Health.  A portion of these funds were used to construct a 1.15 mile multi-use asphalt trail in the Recreation Complex.  The remaining funds will be used for healthy life-style programming.  Both an adult and children's walking club (Trailblazers and Jr. Trailblazers) was formed and operated from August through November.  Both clubs will resume operations in March 2013.

Federal grant monies from the Neighborhood Stabilization Program awarded to the Land Clearance Redevelopment Authority Commission were instrumental in the construction of  Lincoln Memorial Park. Located on North Street, the park includes a paved driveway, sidewalks, basketball court, playground facilities for elementary and pre-school children, picnic shelters and restroom facility.
