This month's topic is Motivating Yourself! My biggest challenge as a teacher was not standardized testing, problem students, or interfering parents, or paperwork. It was keeping myself motivated enough to deal with those things.
In the main column, I share seven ways I keep myself motivated. You'll find one of my favorite reminders to the right, as well as some motivational resources. Principals, don't forget to motivate yourself as well!
This is the start of my busy season. I'm traveling full-time during June, July, and August. As such, many of you who are reading this are new to my e-newsletter. Welcome! This is always a quick read, full of resources for you.
If you are looking for a book to read this summer, consider one of mine. You can use code BBB15 for a discount on any of the titles, including the newest one, Motivating Struggling Learners: 10 Ways to Build Success
which will be out in early July. Just click here and search by my name.

How to Motivate Yourself
Particularly at the end of the school year, I tended to lose my motivation. I've found there are seven ways to keep myself motivated throughout the year.
-
Build a positive memory file. I keep a print file and an electronic file. These are all my notes, pictures, etc. that are positive reinforcers. I still have the first note one of my students gave me.
-
Read books that inspire. Do you have a favorite list of books? I do. One classic I read is The Thread that Runs So True by Jesse Stuart. It a reminder of the power of a committed teacher, despite challenges.
-
Watch inspirational movies. When I'm feeling particularly discouraged, I watch a movie. Two of my favorites are Remember the Titans and Akeelah and the Bee!
-
Find everyday heroes. Who are the everyday heroes you know? These are the teachers who make a difference everyday. They are all around you. Appreciate them!
-
Surround yourself with motivating thoughts. I keep motivational quotes posted on my computer, on my walls, in my journal, everywhere I look on a daily basis. Find your favorites and keep them handy.
-
Keep a success journal. I keep a copy of a success journal. You'll find my templates here (scroll down).
-
Make the choice every day. I make the choice to start every day off RIGHT:
R Remind yourself of why you do this.
I Invest energy in positive activities.
G Grin-it's contagious.
H Hang out with positive people.
T Take time to reflect and renew.

Principal's Perspective
Don't forget to take some time this summer for renewal and rejuvenation! Reflect on what happened this year that you consider a success, think about challenges you overcame, and list all the students you impacted in a positive way. Then, describe how you helped your teachers be successful. Now, read everything you wrote and remember that you made a difference!
