Give your Trees and Shrubs a Winter Coat
Winter Damaged Pine Tree Trees have had a tough time this year even with supplemental watering. Last year's scorching summer and another hard winter may be too much for them to tolerate. Your trees, especially evergreens such as blue spruce, pines and arborvitae may suffer the most from these conditions. Blowing winds and frozen or dry soil make it impossible for evergreens to replace water lost from the needles. Watering well before winter sets in and through the winter when weather permits can help, but is not always enough.

A winter coat or an anti-desiccant spray can be applied to your prized evergreens, helping to keep the water where it belongs, in the trees and not blown away by drying winter winds.

Trees and shrubs that will benefit from an anti-desiccant spray include:
Pines: White, Austrian, Scots (Scotch).
Spruce: Colorado Blue (and cultivars), Norway (and cultivars).
Junipers: tree and shrub forms.
Arborvitae: Green Giant, Emerald Green, Degroot's Spire.
Shrubs & broadleaf evergreens: azalea, rhododendron, holly, boxwood and magnolias.

Also consider a deep root fertilization for all of your valuable trees. This treatment will add nutrients, that manicured lawns lack and trees desperately need, directly into the root zone. Replacing these nutrients is vital after a stressful year. Contact Arbor Masters® to request a winter coat or fertilization for your trees.
The Best Plants for Your Landscape
Shade loving coleus plant
It's a new year, and we have a new category to provide ideas for your garden! We will provide the best annuals and perennials for the Midwest, offering both pros and cons as well as maintenance tips.

We begin the New Year with coleus, a shade loving annual plant that is great for garden beds and landscapes. Coleus comes in an array of colors and varieties ranging from deep greens, vibrant purples, bright yellows and the scarlet red as shown in the picture above. Quick to grow and spread, these plants are virtually maintenance free. They can reach a height of 1-3 feet, depending on the variety. Most coleus do best in the shade but will tolerate moderate sun. Pinch off the shoots to encourage them to spread and keep them well watered. Coleus are subject to mealy bugs, but these can be controlled with an insecticidal soap.
