The Best of the Midwest  Trees
      Vanderwolf Pyramid Pine

Each month, Arbor Masters® will highlight the best trees and plants for the Midwest, providing pros and cons as well as maintenance tips for each species.

Vanderwolf's Pyramid

The Vanderwolf's Pyramid Pine is a winter hardy tree that is adaptable to most areas, but prefers moist, well-drained soil. Known for its pyramid shape, it can reach to a height of 20-30 feet with a branch span of 10-15 feet. The trees blue-green pine needles maintain their color throughout the winter.

Pros: This low maintenance tree is an excellent windbreaker for landscapes. The tree is the most tolerant of the pines for winter burn, salt damage and resistant to deer. Like all pines, it is a great tree for wildlife cover.

Cons: As with most trees, the Vanderwolf's pine will drop a fruit (pine cone) in the fall that will need to be removed. However, the pine cones are a food source for birds and squirrels in the fall and winter months.

Remove dead plants from garden beds to avoid insect and disease issues in the spring.

Drain and put away hoses. Bring in any yard statues or ornaments that might not survive the extreme cold to avoid breakage.

Keep feeding the birds! Food sources are scare during the winter months. High protein and fat content seed or suet will help them to maintain body fat and keep their body temperature stable.

Leaf and gutter cleaning by Arbor Masters
It seems that the trees have finally dropped their leaves. If you have mature trees, the thought of raking all those leaves can be overwhelming. While there are many theories on the benefits of leaf removal, the most important, is to keep your grass and gardens healthy.

While many leaves can be mowed using a mulcher attachment, it can cause a buildup of leaf debris and create a thick layer of thatch. Left over winter, leaves can smother grass robbing it of valuable nutrients, moisture and air needed to survive. In addition, wet leaves can become a breeding ground for insects and diseases that thrive over winter and can cause problems in the spring.

Why spend your weekends raking leaves when you can have Arbor Masters® of Kansas City do it for you? Don't forget to have your gutters cleaned as well. Leaves and debris can clog gutters and create a waterfall effect for rain, melting snow and ice, leaving it to pool at your homes foundation.

Time is Running Out!

Your trees will benefit from a fall fertilization

Time is running out for fall fertilization. Thinning canopies or early leaf and twig drop are just a few signs that your tree may be stressed and lacking essential nutrients.

A fall fertilization treatment provides nutrients lost due to the summer stress of drought, insect damage and diseases. Fertilized trees are better able to withstand the cold winter temperatures and store valuable nutrients needed to bloom in the spring. Your trees will look healthier and be more resistant to insects and diseases.

Did your trees suffer this summer? Contact your local Arbor Masters® to learn more about the benefits of tree fertilization. Kansas City, Oklahoma City, Ft. Worth/Dallas and Wichita first time customers, receive 10% off your first fall fertilization when you reference this newsletter with your request.

We Want to Hear From You!

Arbor Masters® loves to hear from our customers!
One customer recently posted on Google:

"I would like to express my appreciation for the exceptional service your company provided for me August 26th. A huge limb had fallen on my house and was balanced precariously between tree and roof. By noon the same day, the area manager had a courteous, very professional crew out. They worked all afternoon, and were able to get everything safely to the ground without one bit of additional damage to the roof. The clean-up was so thorough, that except for some sawdust under the tree, there was no evidence anything had ever happened.  Thank you again for your speedy response and excellent service.
