The Best of the Midwest  Trees

Golden rain tree
Each month, Arbor Masters
® will highlight the best trees and plants for the Midwest, providing pros and cons as well as maintenance tips for each species.

Golden Rain Tree

The Golden Rain tree is a great landscape tree. Known for its clusters of flowers which seem to rain down from its branches, this fast growing tree is ideal for landscapes. This tree thrives in full sun and can reach heights of 40 ft. and have a span up to 30 ft. New spring leaves have a purple hue that turn a vibrant green in summer and then to golden yellow in the fall. Leaves are actually made up of 7-17 smaller leaves, giving the tree a lacy effect.

Pros: The tree can grow 12-24 inches in a growing season. It is an excellent screen tree and does well as a street tree. It adapts well to most soils types and is resistant to most insects and diseases.

Cons: New trees will require routine pruning of lower branches to increase canopy strength. The Golden rain tree seeds should be raked before they re-seed the tree area to avoid volunteer growth.

Don't forget, fall is the best time to plant trees.

Remove dead or dying plants from garden beds to control the the risk of insects and diseases.

Plant or divide peonies.

Preparing Your Landscape for Fall

Make sure your landscape is ready for fall
The cooler than normal temperatures this past month means that fall is not far behind. Arbor Masters® of Kansas City is your one source for all your fall services, designed to prepare your landscape for the cold months ahead and free up your weekends. Our services include:
  • Complete lawn renovation: A fall lawn renovation program should include aeration or dethatching, overseeding and a fall fertilization. These services will ensure that your lawn has the treatments and nutrients needed to survive the winter and emerge healthy and green in the spring.
  • Garden bed cleanup: Our crews will prepare your garden beds for winter by removing weeds and spent annuals (this will help prevent insect and diseases from wintering in your garden).
  • Fall leaf clean up: Leaves and fallen fruit left on the turf over winter can become a haven for insects, mold and fungus. Arbor Masters® Maintenance Division will remove fallen leaves and debris from your landscape.
  • Tree fertilization: A tree fertilization this fall will add valuable nutrients so that trees can store needed nutrients over the winter.

  • Gutter cleaning: Keep gutters free from leaves and tree debris to prevent clogs and rain water overflow that can damage your foundation.
  • Mulch: Add a fresh layer of mulch to protect perennials and shrubs during the winter months.
Don't spend your weekends doing yard chores. Let the experts at Arbor Masters® help you get your lawn and landscape ready for fall. Contact your local Arbor Masters® to learn more about their fall services.

Arbor Masters® of Oklahoma City was contacted by KFDR Channel 4 In Your Corner last month. An elderly widow had dangerous tree limbs hanging over her home that needed to be removed to avoid damaging her house. Randy Clifton, Tree Division Manager and his crews were ready to assist and removed the perilous tree limbs.

Bury Those Downspouts!
Hide unsightly drainage extensions and enhance your landscape

Curb appeal not only means a well-manicured lawn and a colorful landscape, but also making sure that your home is well maintained both inside and out.

Poorly placed or inadequate downspouts can detract from the look and value of your home and lead to foundation damage. Typical downspouts do not extend far enough into the landscape, allowing rainwater to pool which can lead to foundation cracking or heaving and can cause settlement issues. In addition, pooling water can be a haven for mosquito's as well as damage nearby plants and trees, causing root rot. The solution to this problem - buried downspouts.

Professionally installed buried downspouts are designed so that rainwater will dissipate underground and out into the yard, eliminating standing water in and around foundations. The landscape designers at Arbor Masters® use a proven system that includes durable PVC piping and exit drains so that water does not remain in the pipe, but flows out into the lawn.

Your home is one of the most important investments you will ever make. Burying your downspouts will keep water away from your foundation while enhancing your home and landscape. Contact Arbor Masters to learn more about the advantages of buried downspouts.

One customer recently posted on Google:

"After spending much time gathering many estimates, in March of this year, I settled on and contracted with Arbor Masters Tree Service in Wichita to remove three huge Elm trees from my backyard and grind all the stumps, all of which they did in a very efficient and timely manner. After that, I noticed a large limb scraping the roof of my office building and immediately called Arbor Masters to remove it, which again, they did very professionally. Then, with the three Elms removed, I could see additional tree trimming and tree removal work that needed to be done in my backyard. Without hesitation, I immediately called Arbor Masters to do it. As usual, the work was completed last week exactly as requested. They even went out of their way to accommodate my schedule. Based on the quality of their work, the equipment they have available, and the fairness of their pricing, I don't need to bother with other estimates when I need additional tree work in the future. I'll just call Arbor Masters." Wichita, KS
