The Best of the Midwest  Trees

Fringe tree
Each month, Arbor Masters® will highlight the best trees and plants for the Midwest, providing pros and cons as well as maintenance tips for each species.

Fringe Tree

The fringe tree, sometimes referred to as old man's beard, is a beautiful flowering tree that enhances landscapes and provides moderate shade. The fringe tree can reach up to 20 feet in height and 12-20 feet in width. This slow growing tree produces a sweet smelling flower in the spring which resembles fringe.

Pros: The fringe tree thrives in partial shade/sun environments and holds up well to cold winter temperatures. The tree is slow growing and does well in clay soil.

Cons: The bark of the fringe tree can be brittle and is subject to damage from mowers and lawn equipment. Lower branches will droop, so minimal maintenance is required to allow for pedestrian traffic.

Saving City Water Systems through Bioretention Basins

Landscape division's James Morrison waters newly planted native grasses at Freedom Fields

Arbor Masters Tree & Landscape® in Kansas City will be completing a landscape project for Freedom Fields for the city of Lenexa this month. The project consisted of land clearing and the installation of seven bioretention basins.

More cities are requiring bioretention basins with new residential and commercial construction. These basins serve an important function that benefits our cities' water system. The basin is comprised of an under drain system which is covered by a unique engineered soil mixture and then topped with mulch and vegetation. These basins are instrumental in filtering out pollutants such as salt, pesticides and oils from streets and parking lots, which would normally run off into the city's water system.

The seven bioretention basins for Freedom Fields are all interconnected and have a combined total of over 35,600 plants consisting of 35 native grass varieties that naturally Estimator Jonnathan Salazar and Project Manager Adam Faust review drawings for the Freedom Fields project help filter out pollutants through their root system.

Emerald Ash Borer on the Move!

The Emerald Ash Borer discovered in Overland Park!

The Emerald Ash Borer is in the news again! Discovered last month in Leavenworth County, KS, officials have issued an emergency quarantine prohibiting the moving of ash wood out of the county. Just a few days later, the Emerald Ash Borer was discovered in Overland Park, KS. This destructive insect remains on the move throughout the Kansas City metro area. This recent discovery reinforces the need to treat and protect healthy, valuable ash trees as the Emerald Ash Borer shows no signs of slowing down. Read more about the discovery of this menace in Roeland Park, KS.

Bug Watch!

Tree infested with webworms

Be on the lookout for webworms and aphids. These invading and destructive insects are on the move and need to be treated before they cause damage to trees and shrubs!

You may have seen

webworms in and around your neighborhood. A tree that is infested with this insect will have large webs in the tree canopy. This web protects the webworm while it dines on tree leaves, systematically stripping the branches and causing distress to the tree. While webworms will not kill trees, they can cause major defoliation leaving an unsightly tree in your landscape.

Aphids are not easily visible. These insects congregate on the underside of shade and ornamental tree and plant leaves where they feed on plant sap. A major infestation can cause leaves to wilt and Aphids on the underside of a tree leaf tree branches to dieback. A tale tell sign that your trees have aphids is the sticky

substance they excrete, which usually finds its way onto parked cars, outdoor furniture, walkways and anything else under the infected tree. This substance is also an attractant for wasps, bees and flies.

Both webworms and aphids can be controlled with an insecticide treatment. Because these insects tend to reside in tree canopies, your local Arbor Masters® insect and disease control specialists can perform an insecticide treatment that will reach into the canopies attacking the insects where they live.

Fall is Lawn Renovation Time!

Now is the time to renovate your lawn!

Keeping your lawn healthy and green throughout the growing season can be a tasking job. The summer months bring excessive heat, weeds, insects and disease which can take a toll on your lawn. The key to a healthy lawn is a lawn renovation program that includes aeration, power raking or de-thatching, over-seeding and fertilization.

Now is the time to schedule your lawn renovation. Kansas City and Wichita customers, contact your local Arbor Masters® to get your lawn renovation scheduled.
