The Best of the Midwest  Trees
   bracken brown magnolia

Each month, Arbor Masters® will highlight the best trees and plants for the Midwest, providing pros and cons as well as maintenance tips for each species.

Bracken Brown Magnolia
The bracken brown Magnolia is a beautiful flowering tree perfect for landscapes. With an average height of 30 feet and a spread of 15 feet, this tree grows at a moderate rate and can live up to 70 years. The tops of the leaves are a dark shiny green with a leather-like feel, while the underside is a deep rust brown.

Pros: The bracken brown magnolia produces small, white fragrant flowers that bloom in May and June. The tree prefers an acidic soil but tolerates clay and compact soils as well. The tree will thrive in full sun to partial shade and is resistant to most insects and diseases.

Cons: The trees bark is thin and can be easily damaged by lawn equipment. Like most trees, it will shed leaves along with the flower petals and seeds that will need to be raked up.

Continue to deadhead annuals and perennials to increase flower production and stop plants from going to seed. Lightly fertilize to encourage growth and provide added nutrients.

Have your trees evaluated for pruning. Remove dead or diseased limbs to avoid future storm damage.

Summer Storms Cause Damage in
Kansas City

Storm damaged tree in Kansas City

Damaging storms hit the Kansas City Metro area on July 7th. Strong winds snapped limbs and toppled trees throughout the city. Arbor Masters® tree crews were out removing trees from houses, driveways and yards. This pin oak tree in Leawood fell onto the homeowner's roof causing considerable damage. Although the tree looked healthy from the outside, the tree was in fact decaying. Arbor Masters® Rafael Palma (left) and Jose Sanchez worked to remove the tree from the homeowner's property.

Emerald Ash Borer discovered in Roeland Park, KS

Last month, the Prairie Village Post announced that the Emerald Ash Borer had been discovered in Roeland Park. This destructive insect remains on the move throughout the Kansas City metro area. This recent news reinforces the need to treat and protect healthy, valuable ash trees as the Emerald Ash Borer shows no signs of slowing down. Read more about the discovery of this menace in Roeland Park.

Recovering From Last Year's Drought

Leaf curling and dying as a result of previous year's drought

Midwest trees are showing signs of stress due to last year's extreme heat and subsequent drought. Symptoms such as premature leaf drop, bark splitting, leaves turning off color or thinning of the canopy, could mean that your tree is in distress. In addition, trees suffering from the previous year's drought can become an attraction for insects and diseases.

The trees root system is the key to its survival. Feeder roots, the small willowy roots just below the surface, collect water and nutrients for the entire tree. Without adequate moisture or nutrients, feeder roots can become damaged or die-off. There are measures that can be taken to help reverse the drought damage. Arborists recommend a root stimulator which is injected directly into the root area to help repair, increase and develop stronger roots. In addition, a deep root fertilization in the fall will continue to increase new growth while providing food for the tree throughout the fall and winter months.

Contact your local Arbor Masters® office to see how we can help your trees recover from the heat and drought of last summer.

Crews install the steel plate supports for the new trench
Work is progressing at the Joplin High School and Franklin Technology Center. Arbor Masters Tree and Landscape® crews are working within a tight construction schedule to complete the landscape project including the installation of a 40k gallon rain water harvesting tank and accompanying CDS filtration unit.

Before the crews could begin the installation, they had to install a massive steel support frame to secure the trench during the excavation. Once the well was complete, the crews were able to install the harvesting tank and water distribution system. When this project is finished, the water retention system will help conserve water by collecting and recycling rainwater for the irrigation system and landscaping.

We Want to Hear From You!

Arbor Masters® loves to hear from our customers!
One customer recently posted on Google:

"We had a problem with a tree in our backyard and needed it to be removed. I called for a quote and within a couple of days, we had a quote which we accepted. On the day of the tree removal, two men showed up at the quoted time and quickly, safely, and thoroughly removed the tree. These men not only removed the tree, they cleaned up everything and even swept the driveway. It was if the tree had never been there. I would not hesitate to use Arbor Masters Tree Service again and am happy to recommend them to anyone who needs this type of service." Tulsa, OK
