The Best of the Midwest Trees

Lacebark Elm tree
Each month, Arbor Masters® will highlight the best trees and plants for the Midwest, providing pros and cons as well as maintenance tips for each species.

Lacebark Elm

The Lacebark Elm, also called a Chinese Elm was introduced into the US from China. Popular because of its resistance to Dutch elm disease and the elm leaf beetle, it is highly adaptable to most growing zones.

The Lacebark Elm will grow to a height of 65ft with a 40ft spread. This tree will require routine maintenance for strong branch development.

Pros:

Lacebark Elms are drought tolerant and are considered an excellent shade tree. Their leaves turn golden yellow in the fall and in the winter the bark will exfoliate revealing shades of orange, tan and gray on the trunk.

Cons:

Because of its canopy spread, this tree does require ample room to grow. They have minimal seed production; seeds are small, paper like in appearance which can lightly coat a surface. They are easily removed with a leaf blower.

Late February or early March is the best time to prune rose bushes and fruit trees.

Remove any fallen fruits or vegetables in your garden. Debris left behind can attract insects and diseases in the spring.

Emerald Ash Borer - Know the Enemy
Emerald Ash Borer

The enemy is the Emerald Ash Borer. This highly destructive insect has killed over twenty-five million ash trees throughout the United States and does not show signs of slowing down. To date, the Emerald Ash Borer has been confirmed in twenty-two states; most recently in Colorado. This insect does not discriminate, all ash trees are vulnerable.

While the adult Emerald Ash Borer will only dine on the tree leaves, it is their larvae that cause the lethal damage. Click here to read more about Emerald Ash Borer prevention.
