The Best of the Midwest Trees
Redbud tree
Each month, Arbor Masters® will highlight
the best trees and plants for the Midwest, providing pros and cons as well as maintenance tips for each species.

Redbud

There are a number of popular Redbud varieties; the most common are the Forest Pansy, Oklahoma, Alba and the Texas. The Redbud thrives in moist soil and is at home in either full sun or partial shade. Redbuds can grow as high as 30ft and have a spread of up to 25ft. Fall is the best time to prune a Redbud.

Pros: Redbuds produce white or vibrant pink blooms in early spring. Leaves turn green in the summer changing to yellow in the fall. They are a great attraction for birds.

Cons: The Redbud is susceptible to cankers and borers. Any concerns should be diagnosed by a

Certified Arborist before treatment.

Use a broom to gently remove snow from tree branches. Never shake the branches or tree as this may cause limbs to break and damage the tree.

Protect evergreens and bushes with an anti-desiccant spray. An anti-desiccant application will provide a protective coating to prevent moisture loss during the dry winter months.

 Winter Tree Care
The Midwest has already experienced an ice storm this Tree Covered in Ice past December that left many trees damaged and homes and offices without power. Although you can never truly predict what a storm will bring, you can be pro-active and make sure your trees are healthy and safe.

Look for these signs that your trees may need attention to avoid future tree and property damage caused by winter storms:

  • Tree branches too close or rubbing against your house, outside buildings and overhead power lines.
  • Abundance of dead branches in tree canopy.
  • Fungus or conks growing at base of tree.
  • Large wounds or cracks in the tree trunk or main branches.
  • Trees that have sustained damage from storms in recent years.

Professionally cared for and well maintained trees are more likely to survive winter storms. Contact your local Arbor Masters® to schedule an estimate with a Certified Arborist and make sure your trees are ready for the next storm.
