As we get closer to fall, nursery's and home improvement stores will have an abundance of trees for sale. Sugar maples, bradford pears, magnolia, birch, etc. are all beautiful trees, but which one is the right tree for your landscape? Before making your purchase, consider these important items:
What are you looking for in a tree?
Do you want to add color to your landscape with a spring flowering tree or are you looking for a tree that provides color in the fall? Perhaps you want a screen to offer privacy from your neighbors or provide shade to your home.
Where will you plant the tree?
If you are looking for a tree to add shade to your yard, you will want to make sure that you do not plant it too close to the house. Trees need room to grow and expand. Planting too close to your home allows branches to rub against the house and roof, and roots to make contact with your foundation.
How tall will the tree get at the height of its maturity?
Evaluate the proposed planting site to make sure that the tree canopy has room to expand and there are no overhead power lines nearby.
How fast will it grow?
How fast the tree will grow depends on the tree species and the environment. Willow, cypress, poplar and maple are a fast growing and low maintenance trees. For a slow growing shade tree, choose oak, linden or a locust shademaster.
There are hundreds of tree varieties to choose from. Are you looking to enhance your property but not sure which tree is best for your landscape?
