De-icing Can Hurt Your Landscape

Did you know that salt from snow plow trucks can damage your trees, shrubs and grass?

Evergreens damaged by de-icers

Excessive salt can leach vital water away from your landscape and be absorbed into the root systems of trees and shrubs. This can cause browning, stunted growth and even die-back. Evergreens are especially vulnerable to salt damage. Sadly, damage is not visible until spring when new growth begins.

If you see damage to your landscape due to de-icing agents, contact your local Arbor Masters® for an evaluation and treatment recommendations.

 The Benefits of Dormant Pruning

Dormant pruning

It may be winter but your trees still need TLC. Although trees and bushes have gone dormant, now is one of the best times to prune. Your trees, especially Pines, will benefit from dormant pruning. Removing dead wood, diseased and unsafe branches will help prevent future storm damage that could injure the tree or surrounding buildings. Pruning while trees are dormant will allow wound sites to heal before spring when insects re-appear. This will also allow your trees and shrubs to focus new growth to only the healthy limbs.

Make sure that your tree is evaluated by a Certified Arborist who is trained and experienced in dormant pruning. Remove the potential for storm damage and request an estimate for dormant tree and shrub pruning.

Emerald Ash Borer Protection

           Emerald Ash Borer

The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) has been in the news having recently been found in the Kansas City Metro Area. Although spring may seem far off, homeowners should start thinking about EAB preventative maintenance for their valuable Ash trees now.

While initially thought to be a death sentence for all Ash trees, there are preventative treatments available. A Certified Arborist can recommend an insecticide treatment that can provide protection against the EAB, as well as shield a tree already infested, from further damage (this treatment is only effective for Ash trees that are less than 40% infected).

Trees are a valuable asset to any property. Protect them from invading and damaging insects with a preventative treatment this spring. To learn more about the Emerald Ash Borer and treatment options, contact Arbor Masters of Kansas City®
