Preparing for Winter Storms
The Farmer's Almanac predicts a wet and wild winter for 2012. While the Southeast portion of the U.S. is expected to have heavier than usual precipitation, the Midwest should experience normal winter conditions. Unfortunately, the experts cannot predict the amount of snowfall or severity of winter storms.
To help prepare your trees and landscape, the Arborists at Arbor Masters® have put together a list for winter preparation:
- Winterize your lawn: A winter fertilization application will allow your grass to strengthen the root system and stimulate growth in the spring.
- Anti-desiccant application: An Anti-desiccant application for evergreens will help them maintain moisture normally lost in the winter due to cold temperatures and drying winds.
- Clean deadwood from trees and shrubs: Removing dead, diseased and dangling branches from trees and shrubs will minimize the damage to your landscape and potentially your home.
- Fertilize: Trees and shrubs should be fertilized to help replenish lost nutrients during the summer months. A deep root fertilization will help promote new buds and growth in the spring.
No matter what type of weather Mother Nature throws at you, make sure that your trees, shrubs and landscape are protected. Contact Arbor Masters® and let the experts help protect your valuable trees and landscape this winter.

Winter Watering | |
You may think that since fall is here, you no longer need to routinely water your trees and shrubs. Unfortunately, that is not the case. The effect of the past summer's drought will continue to distress trees throughout the winter and into the spring. Many areas in the Midwest are well under the rainfall levels needed to maintain a healthy landscape.
To maintain the health of your trees and landscape, Arborists recommend continued watering up to and after a freeze. A deep root watering at the base of the tree is required to keep trees and shrubs hydrated over winter. Evergreens in particular, will benefit from a winter watering. This type of tree is more vulnerable to injury from bitterly cold winds that can cause dieback or burn to the branches.
Arbor Masters understands the value of your trees and the need to keep them healthy all year long. The ArborCare Watering Program provides water, enriched with natural products to strengthen trees and shrubs, needed to survive the winter. Contact the tree care experts at the Kansas City and Wichita, Kansas Arbor Masters® offices for details.
