 PEOPLE:
A Celebration of Local Food
In celebration of the local food movement, Cleveland has been buzzing with activities recently, from the Sustainable Cleveland 2019 Summit to the 8th International Public Markets Conference. Neighborhood Progress just co-hosted Cleveland's first annual local food feast, the Potluck in the Park, a free and easy way for all Clevelanders to take part in Cleveland's local food movement. Over 200 people attended and over 30 volunteered at the event at Edgewater Upper Pavilion Park. Guests brought a dish to share and non-perishable food items for donation to the Hunger Network of Greater Cleveland. Local restaurants shared their favorite dishes, including Light Bistro, The Souper Market, The Root Café, Nature's Bin, Tommy's Restaurant, Great Lakes Brewing Co., Molinari Culinary, Map of Thailand, Empress Taytu, and Gypsy Bean & Bakery. Cleveland Crops, Cleveland Division of Water and other groups were on hand to provide educational materials, freebies, and activities for attendees. The Potluck in the Park occurred only a week after the Cleveland 2019 Summit celebrated the Year of Local Food and transitioned to the Year of Advanced and Renewable Energy. Over 500 people attended the Cleveland 2019 Summit including youth from local high schools. Keynote speakers included Jeremy Rifton, author of Third Industrial Revolution, Janine Benyus, founder of Biomimicry and Kathleen Merrigan, Deputy Secretary of USDA. Read More -> | |

PLACES:
Ohio's first and Cleveland's own Velodrome
You may have watched the 2012 London Olympics this past summer and seen cyclists racing around a steep, indoor oval track and wondered... "what is that?" The answer: a Velodrome and Cleveland is now home to one, the first in Ohio. I n 2007, the nonprofit Fast Track Cycling formed to establish and operate an indoor cycling track in Cleveland. On September 30th, the vision came true with the opening of the Velodrome. Since the Velodrome's grand opening, the track has had over 200 individuals visit and held two racing events: the Ohio State Championship and the Cleveland-Detroit Challenge. There was a laundry list of criteria to determine the site for the Velodrome. But the biggest reasons the Velodrome is located in Slavic Village is because the community welcomed the Velodrome with open arms, and it's been a mutually beneficial relationship. "People are coming to the neighborhood to go to the Velodrome that normally wouldn't come to this area," Brett Davis said. Davis is an avid cyclist and the President of Fast Track Cycling's Board of Trustees. "They get to see what the neighborhood has to offer." |

 COMMUNITY:
Buckeye Neighborhood Transformation
Orange construction cones everywhere, dust flying in the air, and the sound of power tools buzzing off. These are all the current sights and sounds in the Buckeye Neighborhood on Shaker Boulevard between Woodhill Road and East 116th Street. The Buckeye Neighborhood is undergoing a transformation and if you haven't been to the east area lately, you may be surprised to see some of the projects underway. The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA) is finishing construction of a new innovative $3.5 million station located at the intersection of Woodhill Road, Shaker Boulevard, and Buckeye Road. The Buckeye/Woodhill Station features two open glass canopies leading down to the tracks, new ramps, and new signage. Public art at the station includes a "manka-phone," a 20 foot stainless steel sculpture of a microphone representing the jazz history of the Buckeye Neighborhood. Ceramic tile designed by Richard Fleischman called "Ribbons of Hope" are also featured. The RTA Station is set to open soon with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in late October. RTA and the Buckeye Area Development Corporation (BADC) are also collaborating to create a Buckeye/Woodhill Station Area Plan. The plan focuses on developing the area surrounding the RTA station and includes housing development, park developments, landscaping, roadway, and bike and pedestrian enhancements. |
