Credit for Online Classes?
Massive Open Online Classes have been getting a lot of attention. Last month, as reported by the Chronicle for Higher Education, the American Council on Education, the leading umbrella group for higher education, announced that college students could be eligible for credit by passing five online offerings by Coursera, a Silicon Valley provider of online education. And last week, a California legislator introduced a bill calling for development of 50 online classes as potential substitutes for the hard-to-get core courses required for graduation at UC, Cal State and community colleges. MOOCs for credit is controversial, and it could shift the ground under higher education.
