1972 - Digging the Back Basin

Prior to 1972, what is now the Back Basin was a cranberry bog.  The
Kingman family dug out the bog to create the basin, depositing the spoils
to fill in around the barges in front of the Chart Room and in the area of
the current travel lift pit and dock house.  When excavation and rip rap construction was complete, they broke open the last piece behind the
lower heads to flood the new basin.
