Is technology your ally or adversary?

Your Master

Technology rules you life. Everywhere you look around you are surrounded by it. It has permeated every pore of your life. Take the case of the once humble cell phone. From a dapper device that used to merely transmit your voice over a distance it has snowballed into a wonder widget that you run your business, career and life with. In a way this is "Honey, I shrunk the Personal Computer" miniaturization at its best. Almost everything that the once vaunted personal computer could do, a smartphone does. The phone has finally earned its smarts.

Technology Scorecard
Life and world changing it has indeed been and it is only appropriate to work up a scorecard listing the pluses and minuses of this juggernaut. And believe me, it is not all pluses. It has many times changed your life for the worse without you even being aware of it.

The Pluses
Among the many pluses of technology in your life, the obvious ones are the shrinking of distances - you are just a flight away to any corner of the universe, the ability in communications to see each other live apart from hearing the voice over vast distances and the ability through social media to communicate any news to any one at just a tap of your mobile device. Technology has indeed made the universe a global village.

But technology's pluses are more deep rooted on a personal basis for you. It has meant that nurturing your dreams is not just a hackneyed expression to bandy around but a potent, living aspiration you can see to fruition. You see, technology has now lent wings to your aspirations.

For example, if you had always dreamed of walking through the world renowned and historic Temple of Luxor in Egypt, you can now plan and execute that aspiration right from your smartphone. Technology will not have much meaning if it meant an advance in science which does not touch the life of ordinary folks like you and me. Now you may argue that this aspiration will still cost money to realize and you are right. However, just think about it. Just the fact that wherever you may be located, you are now able to think about doing this trip which earlier was impossible to be even conceived of. That is squarely technology shrinking distances in a way you can now actually realize your dreams. This is but an example of a leisure activity.

What if you had always wanted a degree from a Harvard or a Stanford but just could not even think about it. Well, with the virtual classroom and the burgeoning of online education this is a reality. This is again technology at work.

The thorn in the rose

As I said before, it is not all roses. Technology has carried its fair share of thorns as well. For instance, if you said technology rules your life now it is also for all wrong reasons. The E-Mail monster has paralyzed you so much that even if you wanted to say something to your colleague sitting three feet away you would rather shoot out an e-mail. The personal touch is fading away and this gives rise to a totally different swathe of relationships. Body language has literally meant how the body of your e-mail is written.

Staring at computer and or mobile screens in rapt fixation is one of the pet activities you indulge in. Being outdoors has completely disappeared. This has connotations - not good ones - on stress levels, health, fitness, psychological strength and so on. We have become slaves to that sliver of digital technology.

Another gross manifestation of technology is that we need hand holding whenever we venture out. Our orientation skills have become nought. We do not know left from right and north from south. We crave a GPS to guide us from place x to place y. This simply means that where once upon a time we would use our brain to sketch out a route map (thereby firing those crucial neurons within), we just let a digital device again call the shots. Technology in a way is letting us use less and less of our cerebrums for problem solving. That cannot be good in the long term.

The Social Media Goliath
Social Media is a progeny of technology. If technology is controlling your life, social media is a major weapon in technology's arsenal. In metaphorical terms, if a pin drops in the far away land of the Northern lights - Iceland, it reverberates down in southern hemispheric New Zealand. You may question my claim whether the dropping of a pin can defy laws of sound and reverberate, but remember it is in metaphorical terms. Anyway, we are digressing. What I meant is that nothing is private anymore.

From the introduction of a new (kitten) member of the family to the celebration of being present at the Olympic Games, no event is small enough not to be broadcast to the world. The only privacy laws that are applicable are the ones that are violated each day. It has taken away the personal pleasure of keeping something to oneself. Don't get me wrong, I am not against social media. It is just that it has made me (at least) wistful about some things of yore that I used to enjoy - personal space and some degree of confidentiality.

Who is the culprit?
So, in all this, who is the culprit? Is technology an ally or adversary? Or is it the wrong question?

Are we the culprits as ones who have made technology either an ally or an adversary?

Go on, take a look at how you harness this marvel of modern times and judge for yourself whether it is an ally for you or an adversary.
And remember just one thing, don't use technology to find that out!

What you think about shapes your destiny!

Did you know that thoughts were things?

Serendipity?
Have you ever been in a situation when something that occupies your mind, that you constantly think about suddenly and apparently magically appears in your life?

Say, while watching television you came across an advertisement for a gorgeous vacation in Hawaii. The ad is beautifully done with videos of sandy beaches, swaying palms, clear blue waters, trekking trails, the attractions seemed endless. Since the ad was being repeated almost every day for a continuous period (there is a secret purpose for that as well) your mind latches on to it. Among all other attractions this vacation idea was something after your own heart. You begin to visualize yourself in Hawaii, walking on the sandy beach, playing around in the water, going on treks. Oh God this is something I really want to do!

Each day you wake up, you cannot remove that visualization from your mind. Moreover, you have been working so hard that you need a holiday. This was the perfect answer. You need this holiday. Besides, you always wanted to go to Hawaii.

A greater intelligence
After weeks of visualization, one morning you are clearing your mail box. After putting away the junk mail, one particular envelope catches your eye. Probably because it was covered with a gorgeous beach and sea scape wall paper and the words GORGEOUS HAWAII!!! emblazoned on it. Your heart does a somersault! This was what you have been fantasizing about in the last few weeks.

Immediately below the gorgeous Hawaii legend you see something else that gives you goose bumps. The words are: 75% OFF!! This is divine! A holiday you yearn for at žth the cost! By God's Grace you are being blessed! (Or that is what you normally attribute such mannas from heaven to.) A greater intelligence seemed to be operating.

Well, indeed so. It is none other than Universal Intelligence. Welcome then to the Law of Attraction.

Law of Attraction? What is that? This should be your next line of thought. Well, patience and read on.

The Law of Attraction
The law is simple enough. You attract or manifest in your life what you think about - good or bad.

Pay particular attention to the last three words. You literally attract good or bad things based on your good or bad thoughts (this is not a good or evil comparison, bad thoughts are negative thoughts or thoughts of despair). The world is replete with examples of those who focused on seemingly impossible things and achieved them. There are equal examples of those who attracted seemingly impossible to occur misfortunes in their lives by thinking up and obsessing on bad things.

In The Strangest Secret, a best selling book and audio by Earl Nightingale Shoaffe (known as the Millionaire Maker), he draws parallels between the process of cultivation and our minds.

He says human beings must behave like farmers when they use their minds. Just like the farmer digs, plants, pours water, nurtures his crops, so too human beings must think, plan, take action and nurture their thoughts if they want them manifested in their lives and become successful.

However he cautions that nature is unforgiving. If you plant thoughts of failure and disappointments in your mind, nature will return those exact seeds as plants of failure and disappointments. He says something more profound too: Just like the farmer is very clear that he wants green not red apples and proceeds to sow seeds of green not red apples, so too humans must sow the specific seed of what they seek. This simply means you must know very clearly what you seek in life. Not some vague, fanciful notion but a deep rooted, all consuming desire to get, do or be something. That makes all the difference. And for that to happen a key ingredient that must be present is action. The greatest ally to the Law of Attraction is the Law of Action.

The Law of Action
The Law of Attraction has its foundation in belief and in the Law of Action. First, you must believe that you will get, do or be what you are aiming for. If it is a halfhearted, hit or miss attitude you carry towards your goal, the law just does not kick in. Once you have belief (and mind you it may not seem like you can see any light at the end of the tunnel) that belief will kindle action in you.

Martin Luther King Jr once said: "Take that first step in faith; You do not need to see the whole staircase, just take that first step."

The Hawaii Vacation
You may have noticed that in the Hawaii Vacation example, Universal Intelligence is presenting you with an opportunity only. You still have to take action, find out information, spend money and cross hurdles. This is a simple example of the law operating.

Key Ingredients

However, there are some key ingredients that make up the successful operation of this law.

  • The Law of Attraction applies only to those individuals who are willing to believe themselves. Faith, as it is said, moves mountains. Even if your goal seems impossible now, if you believe you can achieve it and work towards it you will. Belief is everything.
  • The Law of Attraction applies only when you take action on what you hope to accomplish. If you just day dream without raising a finger to act on your dreams, nothing will happen.

Napoleon Hill the author of the all time Classic Think and Grow Rich said: "If you continue to do what you been doing, you will continue to get what you have been getting." In this case, if you continue to just dream without acting you will continue to get nothing.
  • The Law of Attraction resides in an environment of consistent harmony. Your thoughts must be in harmony with your sub conscious mind and self. You cannot wish for love if you are not loving yourself. You cannot hope for successes and riches when your mindset is negative and your thoughts filled with disappointments. When your thoughts, motivations and actions are in sync, the Law of Attraction will work its magic.
  • Give without expectation and Get with abundance. The Law of attraction is after all a manifestation of sowing what you reap. You must give without expecting to be rewarded and that will prepare you to get or receive. Oprah Winfrey once said: "The measure of your success is when you can do something with your heart without expecting something in return." If you want others to be generous to you (in opportunity, reward or anything else), you must first be generous yourself. It is as unfailing as the Laws of Physics.
  • Finally, the Law of Attraction finds it's abode in peace of mind. If you are at peace with yourself and are not easily affected by disappointments, failure and strive to do what you believe in, the Law of Attraction cannot but deliver. Obstacles are but ways for a greater force to test your faith and persistence.
Misconceptions
Misconceptions are rampant about the Law of Attraction. People generally take it to be a switch with which you can turn on or off your successes or failures. It does not work that way. It cannot work that way. In fact, the opposite is actually true of the law.

If you go about your life mission sincerely and take positive action following your positive thoughts, you will be surprised at what the Law of attraction will make available to you. It will seem as if the entire universe conspired (in a good way) to bring you rewards. It is a feeling that to a greater or lesser degree you might have already experienced in your life when all odds were stacked against you but you still prevailed. This is nothing but the law in its full glory.

Let me leave you with this thought.

Focus on what you want from life in a positive, inspiring manner and take firm, affirmative action and then bask in the abundance that the Law of attraction sends your way.

It will give you goose bumps when that happens. (It is giving me goose bumps just writing and thinking about it).

Go make the Law of Attraction your soul mate.
