Celebrate small win moments
|
They will prepare you for the Big Wins!
The Magic of Moments
Moments are magical. Moments are ethereal. They are like the flakes of snowfall that begin in all their pristine whiteness and in a jiffy melt into colorless water. They are gone before you know. Unless you can capture them and savor the moment as the Zen principle teaches, you have lost them forever. Small wins allow you to cherish those moments. Alas, however, you forsake them so often that you have lost count. However, in their intrinsic temporariness there is a mother lode of joy.
The Eternal Wait
It is often overlooked (at a great cost) that happiness and success are delivered by small win moments - those little acts of conscience, kindness, care, initiative, thought rather than fantastic, big forays of global implications. In fact, one illustrious film maker and writer in the Indian movie firmament put it well when he said something to this effect: "We are all waiting for that phenomenal moment, that world shaking event, that landmark occasion to celebrate and express joy and in the process trample on hundreds of small, seemingly inconsequential molecules of time to do exactly that - celebrate and feel good." And what happens when that gigantic event does not happen as it often does, we get depressed, withdraw into our shells never to harbor such dreams and curse our luck for it. We just are not lucky, we decide. But who are the lucky ones - those who continue to be ready to open when opportunity comes knocking - big or small opportunities.
However in all this post event futile breast beating we have relinquished the most precious commodity of all - teeny-weeny, now here and there gone forever, moments where we could have celebrated and boosted our spirits. It will not guarantee success (there is no such thing in this world as a guarantee) but it will have given you that much needed strength of will to march on and lo and behold, at some point of time the Laws of Compensation will kick in to reward you for those insignificant seeming droplets of time which you invested in to give yourself that helping hand of motivation. If faith can move mountains, positive motivation can make the process seem like child's play.
The Journey is more exciting
It is often said that the journey to success is more exciting than the destination. If that be the case keeping your spirits alive and kicking is paramount. For in those, certain to appear instances of disappointment and despair, it will be your spirit that will keep you going. To keep that spirit up you will have to take each small win, no matter how minuscule it may appear to be, as an occasion to celebrate and push on. It is no easy thing to do particularly when the spirit is at a low ebb but you have to do it. Adversity reveals genius, prosperity conceals it. Your acid test is when the chips are down. Anybody can be good spirited when times are good but the litmus test of character is when your back is to the wall. So, how do you keep your spirits up when you face disappointments? Well, one certain way is NOT to equate setbacks as failures. Napoleon Hill in his epic book Think and Grow Rich says: "there is a seed of an equivalent benefit in every disappointment." The key is to put the setback behind and look for that equivalent seed. It is difficult for sure but you cannot expect success and happiness to come to you without hard work and an iron will power. No pain no gain.
What is a small win moment anyway?
A small win moment is any incremental progress made as a result of sincere effort put in. Often small win moments are simple acts of thoughtfulness. Many years ago I worked in a company whose then CEO would always say: "if you have done your best you cannot do better than that." So, you should tell yourself that you did everything in your power and if you did not get the result you wanted it was definitely not for want of trying. This will immediately remove the blame mantle being put on you. The moment you stop blaming yourself for disappointments you have won half the battle. The rest of the motivation to be mustered will be by renewing efforts at your target. You see most times you tend to equate the problem with your self. You are not the problem. Everybody faces failures and disappointment. It does not mean you castigate yourself for that.
Returning to the issue of small win moments, look for instances of improvement in your endeavor. Look for something beyond just yourself. You can find this in everything that you do irrespective of whether you succeeded or failed. Try it. It is therapeutic. Instead of delivering a knock out blow to your self-esteem, it will pick you up from the canvas and make you look for that silver lining in the cloud. A positive mindset is irresistible. Tenacity is a virtue of the gods. It will revitalize the adrenalin which went to sleep.
Deed without expectation
Nothing equals a deed done without expectation of reciprocation. Try it. It will lend you wings. You will feel so upbeat. And the smaller the deed the greater the feeling of fulfillment. Say a kind word to somebody you do not know, ask about the well being of your Apartment Lift Attendant (if there is one). There are as many opportunities to feel good about yourself as there are moments. It just requires a heartfelt effort. Small win moments are win-wins. All parties benefit. You do not have to trample on something or somebody to get ahead and feel good. That is definitely not success.
The Magic of Gratitude
Gratitude is magical. Forgiveness is transformational. When you stop trying to get even for something somebody did to you willfully or otherwise, you have liberated yourself from the huge fetters of revenge seeking. Because getting even has no end. And by doing that you are losing even more precious time when you could convert them into pedestals to peace of mind. With it will come the ability to recognize and leverage the power and might of small win moments. Small win moments are unselfish. They exude kindness and caring. It is ironical that these so called "small" win moments turn out to be the fulcrum for some of your biggest victories. And they will then be adorned with the humility of the soul.
The great Charlie Chaplin once said: "Life laughs at you when you are unhappy, Life smiles at you when you are happy but Life salutes you when you make others happy."
Let me leave you with this thought.
Start today on small win moments - for yourself and the world around you. Go on.
You will force Life to salute you. Would you not want that?

Your 8 word Personal Mantra Magic
|
Do you want to be the CEO of your life?
What is a mantra?
Mantras are mesmeric. They take you down paths hitherto untrodden. But what is a mantra, anyway? Actually it is a word borrowed by the English Dictionary from a Sanskrit word "mantra" meaning "invocation" or "chant." So a mantra is a chant. However, I am definitely not suggesting that you turn your hectic work days or even weekends into chanting binges. What I mean is, treating the mantra as a philosophy that you can live, by chanting it silently to yourself in every act of yours. In short, mantra is a creed you can live by.
Tom Peters the firebrand speaker and thought leader says you are the CEO of your own life. If that be the case a mantra would be appropriate for yourself.
Why a mantra?
Why should you have a mantra? What is the big deal about it? Mantras play a phenomenal part in their designated role as philosophical beacons. Mantras are what you stand for. They are part of your inner sanctum of thoughts, motivations, initiatives, crusades and finally action. They are embedded in your psyche. You may not even know it or knowing it acknowledge it but everything that you do in life is actually a manifestation of that mantra - you could say it is the voice of your sub-conscious or even the soul.
To test this out, analyze any action that you take and in particular the ones where you seem to do it almost mechanically and look for a motive or reason. Why did you act this way? What made you take this action? Why not something else or even no action? If you dig deep enough you will find buried a link to your motivations. Take for example a public demonstration by animal activists against indiscriminate killing of whales. Why do some of us join the demonstration while others watch it like any other show on television and some others do not have time for these kind of things. This is not being judgmental about anybody rather it is a reflection of how your psyche works. Some of you feel strongly about it while others do not.
For those who feel strongly about it, there is a match between their own motivation and philosophy and the activists. It resonated with some of you. It is like turning on the television and finding your favorite program or show on. Your mind is alert now, you are paying attention, in a manner of speaking you are in sync with it. Similarly a mantra or a philosophy acts as your conscience keeper. It guides you towards things you want to be part of and away from what you would like to avoid. I could very well stick my neck out and say that passion is the core ingredient in a mantra or philosophy. This is why a mantra is a creed, something which you would put your precious signature on.
Personal Mantra
Mantras or philosophies are thought to be only belonging to companies and businesses. But that is as far away from the truth as the thought that a mantra is a gimmick. It sounds good to have a mantra or a philosophy. But the soul of a mantra is in living it, breathing it and epitomizing it. It is not some superficial trick to look good.
Mantras are rudders that guide your thought processes. Imagine a ship whose engines are turned on and let loose at sea. There is no navigation. How far do you think it will go? It will probably be found wrecked on some nondescript shore or sink in anonymity. And why? It simply has no direction. Contrast that to a ship which has a destination charted out in its navigation and the rudder controlling that. It will not only reach its port of destination but do so with panache and a clear cut strategy.
Mantras similarly guide you in your journey of life. It is perfectly well to go through life without a mantra. But it would be akin to that of a rudderless ship. Mantras serve to solidify your inner thoughts. They grant a soul to that body. They actually represent you in all your thoughts and actions.
Finding a mantra
Having laid out that argument for a personal mantra how do you go about it? You start with a bit of introspection. Yes, not too much of it. Without a bit of dialogue with your own self you are never going to be able to unearth your inner most thoughts. I promise it will not take too long and will be worth it. 1. Pick one person past or present who you greatly admire. It can be your spouse, parent, uncle, friend, teacher, student, or even somebody you do not know personally. 2. Write 3 qualities you admire in him or her. Write one sentence each why. For example: I admire my Teacher Tom for his passion, humility and knowledge. I admire his passion for teaching where he seems to be transported to a world of his own, enjoying himself so much. And so on. 3. Now pick one out of the 3 qualities that resonates with you MOST. Describe in one sentence Why? Reduce to 8 words or less. There you go. Done.
Role Models
All of us have role models who we admire and yes emulate. It is one of the most natural of human instincts. Imitation is the best form of praise. We wish to be like them, do things they do, follow their sayings and quotes. They have already laid out a path or direction in which they were successful. You do not need to reinvent the wheel. Just use the principles. Mind you I am not asking you to copy them. Ex Apple Evangelist Guy Kawasaki (Read his phenomenal book: Enchantment) once said: " Whatever any one may say about the convenience of copying, there is still a difference between an original and a xerox copy." Don't copy. Just use the principles you admire and give it your own personal, unique flavor. It will be an offering all on its own. An original which is inspired. From that perspective, almost no one is original. There is always an amalgam of idea inspirations that finally produces that output. My 8 word Mantra (which I have been following for many years now) is: " Lifelong Learning and Sharing Knowledge to benefit others." Remember the words in the mantra need only matter from one criterion - they reflect your philosophy, something which you can live each day.
Let me leave you with this thought: Philosophy is not just the domain of philosophers. Tom Peters was right. You are the CEO of your life. Make your Mantra meaningful and live it. You owe it yourself and the world.
