Children's Author Event
Castine author Ellen Potter will read from her "Olivia Kidney" and "Otis Dooda" series books at the Library on Saturday October 19 at 10:30 AM. This event is the third in a series of children's author events at the Library. Ellen Potter will also talk about how she gets ideas for her stories, how her childhood in a New York City high-rise apartment building inspired her books, and how kids can get ideas for their own stories. Lastly, she will do a "mini- workshop" for kids interested in writing their own stories. Ellen has written three "Olivia Kidney" books about a girl living in New York City in a high rise apartment and all of her adventures. She has written one "Otis Dooda" book and has a second one due out in March. The latter she wrote for her son who wasn't interested in most books he had, and started by putting a "wish list" together of things he would want in a book, like LEGOs, "disgusting bits," and illustrations. She says she did research by eating lunch with him and his friends in the school cafeteria for a week. The last event in this series will be Blue Hill author Kelly Cunnane reading from her new book Deep in the Sahara on October 26. For further information, please call Pat at 374-5515.

Playreading: Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike
The public is invited to participate in the Library Play Reading Group on Wednesday October 16 from 6:30 to 9:00 PM at the Library, and every third Wednesday of the month until next summer. The play selected for this month is Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, a comedy by Christopher Durang. The play is about a brother and sister who still live in the home they grew up in, in Buck's County, Pennsylvania, financed by their movie star sister. When she arrives with a hot young boyfriend and says she wants to sell the house, the fireworks begin. The play ran off Broadway in 2012 and on Broadway in 2013, and has won numerous awards, including the 2013 Tony for Best Play. The group welcomes inexperienced and experienced readers alike. The only criteria are the love of plays and the joy of reading them aloud among like-minded theater fans. For further information, contact the Blue Hill Library at 374-5515 or Michael Donahue at 374-5248 (or [email protected]).
