Here Comes "World A'Glow!"

I love a parade - don't you? And there's just nothing like the Downtown Santa Barbara Holiday Parade - the only nighttime parade in town!  It may sound like a cliche, but there's just nothing like a small town holiday parade, and this one, with it's 63-year history, is no exception.

After years of standing at my State Street volunteer vantage point, watching everyone from band marchers and cheerleaders, karate-kickers and gift-wrapped Girl Scouts, energetic elementary school elves and adults wrangling balloons under overhanging trees,
I've learned that this Downtown Parade has got it all.

And that there is nothing like the face of a young child, a'glow with the certainty
that there really is a Santa Claus.

This festive family parade includes floats, bands, and entries of all kinds, including the Prince & Fairy to begin the Parade and to welcome the holiday season to Downtown Santa Barbara.

Consumer Fire Products, Inc. is this year's Presenting Sponsor for the Parade and our Christmas Tree Sponsor. Their generosity is allowing our community to keep this Christmas tradition alive.

Parade Prince and Holiday Fairy
Congratulations to our Holiday Prince, Christian Johnson and Parade Fairy, Mikayla Bohn.
Their winning artwork ensured them a spot in the Parade as the official lighters of the Christmas Tree, kicking off the Downtown Santa Barbara holiday season!

 Parade Grand Marshal:  R2-D2
R2-D2 created by an operator from the official R2 Builders Club
Following directly behind the Prince and Fairy (and presumably offering tree-lighting advice) is the 2016 Holiday Parade Grand Marshal: R2-D2. An American cultural and film icon from Star Wars fame, R2-D2 is included in "The Smithsonian's History of America in 101 Objects," and has been inducted in the Robot Hall of Fame. His appearance marks the first time a droid from a galaxy far, far away has served as a parade Grand Marshal. Members of the world champion Dos Pueblos Engineering Academy team, armed with light sabers, have been recruited to serve as Storm Trooper guards for R2-D2's float.

Non-Profits to Know

The Mission of Peoples' Self-Help Housing is to provide affordable housing and programs leading to self-sufficiency for low-income families, seniors,
and other special needs groups on California's Central Coast.

"Stuff the Bus," in collaboration with Santa Barbara MTD, helps gather toys for the children of PSHH's affordable housing units. With Santa Claus aboard a Downtown Shuttle, volunteers gather the loaded toy boxes of unwrapped toys - often the only present under the tree for many of these kids. To donate a toy (ages infant to 15), call 699-7220, or look for the colorfully wrapped
donation boxes (including at the Downtown Santa Barbara offices).
The "Stuff the Bus" bus, loaded with full toy boxes, will make its way down
State Street on Wednesday, December 16th.
