Stitching together a trauma care network in rural Georgia

Earlier this morning, we told you that Gov. Nathan Deal would include in today's budget proposal more than $12 million for life flights in southwest Georgia, where several hospitals have closed. Apparently, the program would be a Georgia Public Safety department partnership with 14 counties, according to these advance details obtained by WALB-TV in Albany: "When you've got a large distance to cover and you're doing that in a vehicle, it takes a long time to get there. And in a trauma care circumstance, every minute counts," said Col. Mark McDonough, Georgia Department of Public Safety Commissioner. The plan will require the surrounding counties to build an estimated $800,000 hangar capable of housing emergency staff and offices. Counties will also be required to provide five flight nurses. Memorial Hospital, others could get state bailout

ATLANTA -- Local charity hospitals in Georgia like St. Mary's in Athens, Grady in Atlanta and Memorial in Savannah could get a state bailout to replace all or part of federal funds being cut as part of Obamacare, Gov. Nathan Deal's top aide said Wednesday. The bailout could save local taxpayers from being on the hook for the reduced funding. It could also be a lifeline for some rural hospitals on the verge of folding. Chris Riley, the governor's chief of staff, told reporters that Deal is weighing options ranging from a one-time cash injection to an ongoing commitment for hospitals that serve large numbers of uninsured patients.
