State Benefits Plan is on track for controversy

Mixing a multibillion-dollar health contract with fierce industry protests and abortion politics is a sure recipe for turmoil.

 

The new State Health Benefit Plan contract tops the charts on turbulence. It could also produce a significant realignment of the state's health care landscape.

 

The Department of Community Health revealed Thursday at an agency board meeting that Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia will be confirmed as the winner of two major contracts in the State Health Benefit Plan (SHBP), which covers more than 650,000 state employees, teachers, other school personnel, retirees and dependents.

Georgia hospital admissions among nation's lowest

For every 1,000 residents, Peach Staters had only 97 admissions in 2012 -- 15th lowest among the states.

 

In 2012, Washington, D.C., had the highest rate at 213 hospital admissions per 1,000 residents. Alaska and Hawaii were the lowest at 76.

 

The national average was 112 admissions per 1,000 residents.

USDA Announces Funding to Create Jobs, Aid Business and Boost the Economy in Rural Areas

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced today that projects in 17 states and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico will receive loan and grant assistance to create jobs and boost economic development in rural areas. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) remains focused on carrying out its mission, despite a time of significant budget uncertainty. Today's announcement is one part of the Department's efforts to strengthen the rural economy. Rural Business-Cooperative Service Administrator Lillian Salerno made the announcement on Vilsack's behalf while attending the National Veterans Small Business Conference in St. Louis.
