Marine Stadium Presentations

The Miami Marine Stadium continues to attract not just local-but national attention. As we progress in fundraising mode, it is important for us to promote awareness.

We've recently presented to the Ponce Business Association, Rotary Club of Miami (Brickell) and the Florida Leadership Council.

We're always looking to "get the word out". To request a presentation for your group, just reply to this email.

IF SEATS COULD TALK
Dizzy Gillespie, the Marine Stadium, and a Ballyhoo

Since May 2009, we have been collecting memories of the Marine Stadium that we plan to publish in a book entitled,  IF SEATS COULD TALK.

We thought we'd heard it all until Dr. Lewis Carroll told us this story about his son David, who had a chance meeting with famed trumpet player Dizzy Gillespie-and a ballyhoo-at the Stadium. Click
here to read it.

Fundraising Update

In our last newsletter, we told you the Florida State Legislature  approved a $1 million grant for the restoration of the Miami Marine Stadium. We await final approval from Governor Rick Scott but, we are optimistic the appropriation will be approved.  Thanks to the entire Miami-Dade State Legislative Delegation, especially Eddy Gonzalez, Chair and Jose Felix Diaz, Vice Chair, for their support.

We need to raise approximately $30 million to restore the Marine Stadium and another $10 million to create the park adjacent to it. With the contribution from the State, we now have $11 million in funding identified or committed. The "quiet campaign" has been progressing, and we expect to announce additional commitments soon.

While our main focus is currently on major donors, smaller contributions are important (and appreciated) as we build infrastructure in our organization. Friends of Miami Marine Stadium is a not-for-profit 501 (c)(3) so all contributions are tax deductible. You can contribute either by using Paypal which has a link on the upper left hand side of our web page or by sending a check to:

On April 18, the Marine Stadium Basin was included (for the first time!) in Baynanza, the annual Biscayne Bay Cleanup Day sponsored by Miami-Dade County and many participating organizations. 81 volunteers came to the Marine Stadium Basin and collected significant amounts of trash. We would like to thank Keven Mayo and Josh Mahoney of Miami-Dade County and Susan Shapiro of the Biscayne Bay Coalition for organizing this highly successful event. We look forward to participating next year!

For Art Basel 2013, Audemars Piguet sponsored a dazzling art installation in front of the Marine Stadium - "Curiosity", a floating Swiss Chalet by the French Art duo Kolkoz. Check out the video  which has brought worldwide attention to the Marine Stadium.

Jean Francois Lejeune, Professor at the University of Miami School of Architecture, authored an article in Vitruvius Magazine about the significance of the architecture of the Miami Marine Stadium.

Our exhibit at the Coral Gables Museum has been "archived" in this video featuring Curator Rosa Lowinger. Special thanks to Daniel Garcia of the Little Gables Group and Nina Weber Worth.

Our efforts to save the Marine Stadium are gaining recognition! Friends of Miami Marine Stadium won an Advocacy Citation of Merit from Docomomo, an international organization that seeks to document and conserve buildings of the modern movement.
We also received an Organizational Excellence Award for Preservation Advocacy from Miami-Dade County Historic Preservation Board.

Finally, the image below is by photographer Matt Stock, who is planning an exhibit of his photographs of the Marine Stadium soon.

Marine Stadium Inspires Nereida Garcia Ferraz

After visiting the Marine Stadium, Nereida Garcia Ferraz, a painter, photographer and video maker, decided to move her art in a different direction-sculpture. The Stadium reminded her of another Stadium in Havana, on the Malecon. The Stadium seats, which have looked out at the water for decades inspired Nereida to create her first three dimensional works. To read more about it, click here

Nereida's works are part of a group show at DotFiftyone Gallery entitled, "Reverse, Rewriting Culture". The show is up until July 5.
