The Birth of the Stadium

Kim Furlong Corlew

We continue our long running series, "IF SEATS COULD TALK", memories of the Marine Stadium, with an important story about its birth. The stadium opened on December 27, 1963. It was built for boat racing-and it was boat racers who lobbied for its creation.

Kim Furlong Corlew is the daughter of Fuzzy Furlong, one of the Stadium's "founders". To see the story, which comes from Carolyn Furlong's book "The Racer" click  here

We have had a very busy several months with our partners at the Coral Gables Museum. On Thursday, December 12, we had Stephanie Meeks, President and CEO of the National Trust for Historic Preservation take part in a panel along with Jason Clement of the Trust and Jorge Hernandez, Co-Founder of Friends of Miami Marine Stadium.

On Thursday, December 19, at 6:00 PM, Curator Rosa Lowinger will conduct a tour of our exhibit:" Concrete Paradise: Miami Marine Stadium" at the Museum. At 7:00 PM, she will interview Hilario Candela, architect of the Stadium. The Coral Gables Museum also has a new exhibit Hilario F. Candela: The Culture of Architecture, at the Museum. The tour and lecture are free and open to the public.

The photo of Elvis was provided to us by Carolyn Furlong. Carolyn was married to Fuzzy Furlong, who consulted on the movie and actually waived the flag for the race. Fuzzy was a larger than life character and, among other things, a boat racer. He had a significant role in the creation of Miami Marine Stadium. To learn more you can purchase Carolyn's book about Fuzzy,  The Racer.

Visitors to "Curiosity" by Kolkoz
AUDEMARS PIGUET, in collaboration with Galerie Perrotin, sponsored "Curiosity" the art installation floating in front of the Marine Stadium by the French duo Kolkoz. Open to the public on Saturday and Sunday of Art Basel, over 1,000 people visited the Installation. Our partners, the National Trust for Historic Preservation took photographs of people through our "Save Marine Stadium" window. To see more photos from our Miami Marines, click here

The Audemars Piguet sponsored dinner and private party at the installation were among the most talked about events at Art Basel. The opening night dinner, which included guests Serena Williams, Nicole and Lionel Ritchie, even made the widely read NY Post gossip column Page Six in Pier Party Wows Art Crowd.

Both the City of Miami and Audemars Piguet sponsored press events at the the installation. We've already received a great deal of press and some major stories are in the works. Here's one by Blouin Art Info that notes the unique installation along with others from Forbes, Haute Living, and Untapped Cities. This level of exposure is a vital component as we continue our "quiet campaign", seeking high net worth donors.

Finally, we are delighted to report that Hattie Mae Williams was awarded a grant from the Knight Foundation for an interpretive dance piece to be filmed at the Miami Marine Stadium and the Venetian Pool. We can't wait to see what Hattie, and her dance troup, The Tattoed Ballerinas will create!

Marine Stadium Inspires.......

This month, we inaugurate a new column entitled "Marine Stadium Inspires". For the past year especially, we've been inundated with incredible ideas from people inspired by the stadium - in all forms of art, photography, and even student projects. The Marine Stadium has become everyone's muse!  Our column to the left "IF SEATS COULD TALK" refers to people's memories of the Stadium. MARINE STADIUM INSPIRES will illustrate its present and stellar future. A shining example is this astonishing video which already has over 230,000 views on youtube. Please note, the City of Miami has recently removed the catwalk to the press box and the Stadium is closed.

Conclusion

Have you noticed our new look? The logo was designed by Hilario Candela, who designed the Marine Stadium over fifty years ago. Hilario is a Co-Founder of Friends of Miami Marine Stadium, our compass and our guiding star. How fortunate we feel to benefit from his wisdom and passion!

Yes we've been at it for almost six years, but this next year is the key. Please: come to our 50th birthday party, send a contribution, and engage your friends. The time to harness our collective support is right now. If we all pitch in, we'll have much to celebrate for the next fifty years. We close with this photo: The Miami Marine Stadium Shines at Art Basel!
