What You Should Know About Your Electrical Panel
Every home has an electrical or service panel. The panel distributes electricity to outlets, appliances and switches in your home. Circuit breakers in your panel protect wires from overheating and causing a fire. A tripped breaker is caused by overloading the circuit with too many appliances and should be resolved immediately. Older homes use fuses instead of circuit breakers.
According to the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) recommends the following procedures to reset a tripped breaker:
- Unplug or turn off appliances in the room.
- Find your main breaker panel and open the cover.
- Locate the tripped breaker.
- A tripped circuit breaker will be in the off position or in a middle position between on and off.
- To reset the breaker switch it to the off position and then back to on.
- This may restore power to the room. If the problem continues or the breaker trips again, there may be more serious issues. Call a professional.
