Ceiling fans provide both energy and money savings when used properly.  Most ceiling fans only use as much power as a 100 watt light bulb.  To ensure maximum savings follow these guidelines:

  • In the summer months, run ceiling fans in the counter-clockwise direction.  A ceiling fan does not lower room temperature but provides a circulatory breeze which will make the room feel cooler. 
  • During winter months, run your ceiling fan on low in the clockwise direction.  This redistributes the warm air that rises.
  • Purchase multi-speed, reversible ceiling fans that are Energy Star certified.  Energy Star ceiling fans circulate, on average, 15% more air than other fans.
  • Turn off the fan when you leave the room.  Fans cool people not rooms.
