My goal is to send only one email per day but I realized that I forgot to include the information about recycling changing to Tuesdays and since there is NO recycling during Christmas week I wanted to make sure everyone realized that your recycling schedule may have changed too...see below.

Also, I received a "breaking news" alert from DeKalb schools with the discouraging news about our DeKalb County School System's Accredited-Probation and wanted you to know right away.

Finally, here are some more links I received today about ways to help those suffering in Connecticut.

Blue Box Recycling moved to Tuesday for Dunwoody (tomorrow last day to recycle in 2012)

From Audra~I received a note from DeKalb County that my Blue Box recycling has moved to Tuesdays.   Therefore my yard trimmings and Blue Box recycling are both on Tuesdays beginning 12/18/12.   I can't find anywhere that indicates whether or not this is for all of Dunwoody area but I assume so and wanted to share the news.

For more information please call:  770-936-5427 or 770-936-5436

DeKalb County School District is on Accredited-Probation until 12/31/12

Today members of the DeKalb County Board of Education, along with the Superintendent and Senior Team, met with AdvancED and Dr. Mark Elgart, President and CEO of AdvancED. During this meeting, Dr. Elgart reviewed the Special Review Team Report from the October 17-19, 2012 visit. As a result, the District is now being placed on Accredited-Probation until December 31, 2013. The District has received this information and will work collaboratively to review the findings and begin to address the required actions. The District still remains fully accredited and students' academic status remains unchanged.

Original Post:  My friend and neighbor, McDaniel Leask,  approached me this weekend wanting to help spread the word about ways to help the victims' families of Friday's shooting.   McDaniel is from a town in Connecticut near Newtown and describes the area as being much like our community in Dunwoody.   Her sister still lives there and is heading an effort to collect stuffed animals for the children of the school.

They should be new and not used of course. I would also encourage folks in Dunwoody and surrounding communities to donate to any of the established funds.  McDaniel will send any donations to the bank listed below as a collective effort from the "Dunwoody friends of Sandy Hook".

Click here for an article in the Wall Street Journal that is a beautiful testimony showing portraits and profiles of the victims.

Local Collections efforts organized by CT Native, McDaniel Leask:

McDaniel's Address is:

McDaniel Leask
5199 Stratham Drive

Dunwoody, GA 30338

Stuffed Animals: There are two bins on her front porch.  McDaniel will be collecting until 5 PM Wednesday.  Then they will be delivered to the Newtown United Methodist Church, which is one of the sites for grief counseling.

Financial Donations

  • McDaniel will accept checks made payable to:

Sandy Hook Support Fund
C/O Newtown Savings Bank

Donations will be specifically earmarked for funeral expenses and counseling for families and first responders.
