Good mixer loading, better TMR consistency

Caution: Mixing liquids

Many factors affect TMR mix quality and impact ration consistency. Proper ingredient loading into the mixer is critical. Incorporating liquids requires special care.

In one evaluation, we loaded a liquid supplement on the back screw of a twin-screw vertical mixer with front discharge. During feed delivery, TMR moisture levels ranged 3.5% from one end of the feed-out to the other. Cows were able to sort.

Crude protein ranged up to 2.0% across the feed-out. Because of the poor mix, few cows were likely to consume key nutrients in quantities formulated for their diet.
