A quick way to evaluate the comfort level of your cows is to calculate the proportion of cows laying in stalls ---- the "cow comfort index."
First, count the number of cows laying in stalls. Then, divide by the number laying plus the number standing in stalls or standing in the aisle waiting to lay down.
For mattress-bedded barns, more than 80% of cows should be laying in stalls. For sand-bedded barns, the proportion laying in stalls should be greater than 90%.
For most of 2014, dairy producers in the U.S. have been riding high prices compared to their counterparts abroad. Now, as the U.S. market weakens, domestic and international milk prices are converging. However, low feed costs ahead means efficient producers can keep riding the bubble. Read more
