Cows prefer consistency and don't like a lot of variation in their daily routine. For key production parameters you're already measuring, you can monitor the variation using statistical process control (SPC). Use of SPC techniques may help you anticipate problems and increase consistency.

There are lots of causes of milk fat depression on dairies, including high ambient temperatures and dietary factors including concentrations and physical make up of fiber, excess fermentable carbohydrates, excess rumen unsaturated fats, etc.
Among the factors we can measure, there are clues to the cause of lower milk fat hidden in the measured data. The challenge is to distinguish normal - often unavoidable - variation from "true" or significantly different variation.
Subjecting the data to SPC techniques can help identify a real drop in milk fat concentration versus seasonal and other normal variation. However, then additional tools - such as proper ingredient sampling, consistent lab analysis, and the TMR Audit - come into play to help determine what dietary factor or factors were not as uniform as normal or desired.
