Madison, the Schmidts and the FDA
Director, Global Research and Marketing
Diamond V

The World Dairy Expo was extra special this year. We came to Madison, as we always do, supplied with the latest studies and field trial data showing the multiple ways Diamond V Original Product impacts dairy cow health and production. But this time, things were a bit different. We now had in hand FDA-accepted validation that Diamond V Original Product "helps support DMI of dairy cows when fed as part of a total mixed ration during the first 70 days of lactation." And we thank all who visited us in Madison to learn more about this DMI claim.

The FDA-accepted claim is big, no doubt. Yet it is part of a bigger picture, as illustrated in the Producer Spotlight article in this issue of DairyAdvisor. That piece tells the story of a Sturgeon Bay, WI family whose dairy operation has grown nicely after a fire years ago compelled them to adopt a new direction. They turned adversity into new opportunity, and are succeeding very well. Diamond V has been with them in this journey, helping organize team training, conducting TMR audits, and other services.

What does this have to do with the FDA claim on DMI? It illustrates the idea that constantly doing all you can to improve and succeed can pay dividends. The FDA claim didn't just happen overnight. It is the culmination of years--decades--of investment in research, energy, time and talent to build the Diamond V efficacy story. And with the Wisconsin farm, that same scenario also plays out: Years of building, investing, partnering and just plain working hard are paying off for the Schmidt family. I'm sure that will continue for them over the long term. The same long-term service value we strive to give to our customers will continue at Diamond V as well.

As always, we appreciate your readership of DairyAdvisor and always welcome your input.

Kind regards,

Mike

Who:
Randy and Dena Schmidt & Adrian and Kay Schmidt (Randy's parents)

What:  S&S Jerseyland Dairy, LLC:  2,900 milking Jerseys

Homestead: Sturgeon Bay, WI

History:
An unfortunate barn fire in 1996 launched a new opportunity for the Schmidt family.  Their 70-cow family dairy set off in a new direction.  Starting the following year, Randy began custom raising heifers for local dairy producers.  In 2007, a neighboring farm became available, was purchased and served as an additional site for the Schmidts to grow their operation.  At its peak, the Schmidts reared 6,000 head of heifers, allowing the facilities and business to grow over time.

Randy says that his love for dairy farming was always part of his long-term plan (and dream).

Growing Pains:
The purchase of the neighboring facility allowed for the first steps toward bringing Randy's dream back to life. Little by little, the conversion toward dairy family took hold.  Last year, S&S Jerseyland Dairy embarked upon building a new operation and expanding their main site to a 2,900-cow Jersey dairy operation.  Purchasing 2,500 springing Jerseys brought a huge influx of calvings; up to 500 calves each month!  No easy undertaking for a start-up operation, even for an experienced custom heifer grower and dairy farmer.

Working closely with their herd veterinarian, Dr. Joel Franks, Valley Veterinary Clinic and Dr. Lance Fox of Diamond V, protocols were quickly developed to ensure consistent newborn calf processing. Quality colostrum management and post fresh cow management were critical to the successful start up.  Dr. Fox and Dr. Franks worked closely training and developing sound practices for employees.  Randy credits the smooth start up and transition to having the right people and right resources in place, and is quick to acknowledge his skilled labor force followed through with great care and passion for the cattle.

In addition to the performance-proven products, Randy appreciates the support and resources offered by Diamond V.  His local regional sales manager, Kristy Pagel, is a valued part of the team.
Randy shares, "Kristy has helped in organizing our team meetings and is open to providing whatever the dairy needs from additional employee training to TMR Audits." Diamond V is committed to providing solutions for long term business success.
