DV Management News
Our DMI achievement will be talked about at World Dairy Expo
Director, Global Research and Marketing Diamond V
We are staffing our World Dairy Expo booth 3005 in Madison next month with plenty of Diamond V experts ready to talk with you about our FDA-reviewed and accepted DMI claim.
That claim: "Diamond V Original Product helps support dry matter intake (DMI) of dairy cows when fed as part of a total mixed ration during the first 70 days of lactation."
And, as volumes of additional research have shown, greater DMI supports greater milk production, better reproduction and healthy cows. Click the image below for more information.
We hope you'll stop by and chat with us. Any time an FDA claim approval is attained, that's a pretty big deal. It's further acknowledgement that the science is sound and the results are strongly validated. But then, that's our way of life at Diamond V.
As always, we appreciate your readership of DairyAdvisor and always welcome your input.
Kind regards,
Mike

Producer Spotlight
A living lab for students, and for TMR Audit

Who: David Lawstuen, Director
What: The Iowa Dairy Center
Where: Calmar, IA
When: Opened in 2000
A multifaceted partnership: The Dairy Center is a working dairy farm and dairy education center rolled into one. This innovative concept emerged from a partnership between the Northeast Iowa Dairy Foundation and Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC), plus Iowa State University Extension and the Midwest Dairy Association.
The purpose of The Dairy Center is to educate and train the next generation of dairy producers, who are students enrolled in NICC's two-year dairy degree program. The Dairy Center also hosts tours for scores of elementary students year round. It contains a full dairy facility, three milking systems (herringbone and parallel parlors, and two soon-to-be robotic milking stations), plus classroom and public meeting space.
Getting down to business: Students at the 300-cow operation learn about dairying, and also get exposed to the real-world calculus of running a dairy. That is, how to get more milk as efficiently as possible.
David says The Dairy Center brought in Mark Tegeler from Diamond V last February to work witih 2nd year students and do a basic TMR Audit. The audit pointed to a problem with over filling, and not getting a complete mix. The students changed the fill process from 3 ration batches at 100% to 4 batches filled at 80%.
Mark also made a video recording of barn activity at 4 a.m. After seeing feed pushed to the east end of the barn, with west-end cows running out of feed, changes in the distribution process were made.
Charting growth: The result of the TMR Audit: "Milk went up right away," say David. "Production increased anywhere from 1.5 lbs to 2 lbs in two weeks. We all talked about it with Mark in class. The students charted it all. It was great for the students to see that."
