When performance counts, science matters

Dairy nutritionists and producers now have more proof of the significant role Diamond V Original Product plays in supporting dry matter intake (DMI) during the early lactation phase

The latest outcome of our 70-year commitment to quality research is the recent decision by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to accept the functional claim, "helps support the dry matter intake of dairy cows when fed as part of a total mixed ration during the first 70 days of lactation." We're proud of this latest validation of Diamond V's microbial-based fermentation technology; it lends even stronger credence to the hundreds of field trials and peer-reviewed published studies we've conducted over the decades.

Increases in DMI during early lactation are associated with:

  • Reducing the impact and severity of negative energy balance (NEB) around calving;
  • Improved liver function leading to increased availability and conversion of propionate to glucose, a key driver of milk synthesis;
  • Higher peak milks; and
  • Increases in total lactation milk production.
The reason we have such a long-standing emphasis on research is simple: Quality measurable science provides the strongest possible evidence that a product and technology will produce the results that the market -- dairy nutritionists and producers -- requires for ongoing production and profit growth. If producers experience sustained production improvement...and they do with Diamond V Original Product...the evidence for that improvement should be documentable and validated. That is the core of our relationship with our producer partners.

We are glad the FDA has seen fit to further validate the science that we know has been making a difference for dairy nutritionists and producers. Please come visit with us in Booth 403 at the
ADSA-ASAS Joint Annual Meeting (JAM)   We'd love to talk with you about this claim and the science behind it.

As always, we appreciate your readership of DairyAdvisor and always welcome your input.

Kind regards,

Mike

Who:
  Brian Hemann

What:
  Ag Oasis dairies

Where:
 Kansas and Oklahoma

Building a legacy in the Midwest:  Brian plus partners Pete Tuls and Adam Wacker are owners of three dairies: Tuls Dairy in Liberal, Kansas, MasCow Dairy in Moscow, Kansas, and Lost Trail Dairy in Boise City, Oklahoma. Collectively, they milk 11,000 cows and employ 86 people on the dairies.

Group training for all: Brian recently brought in Dr. Bill Stone from Diamond V for a group training workshop on total silage management. "We included the tractor drivers, cutters, everyone, so we all understand the importance of every element of silage," says Brian.

"We explained every person's role, because silage has more important economic value today than it ever has," Brian says.

Brian says they've done similar training sessions in the past. Dr. Jeff Mikus from Diamond V presented a session on TMR auditing. "We stressed the overall quality of the product coming out of the mixer," says Brian. "We covered cutting, pile maintenance, forage length.
"

And the benefit of these sessions? "You're able to see consistency in silage from load to load, and also consistency in rumen health," says Brian.

Dry weather, but plans for growth
:  With dry conditions in Kansas and Oklahoma in the past several years (though a few inches of rain have fallen recently), Brian says maintaining forage quality is a challenge, with regular adjustments in the rations needed to compensate for variability.

Still, growth plans are firmly in place. "I think we have the prospect of growing another 50% in the next three years, depending on market factors, of course," says Brian.
