Since 1943, Diamond V has manufactured all-natural, fermentation- based feed additives that improve animal health and performance. We connect our unique competencies in microbial-based fermentation with our specie-specific expertise and world-class research to create profitable solutions for customers around the world. The unique metabolites in Original XPC support robust digestive health by balancing the immune system, gut microbiota, and optimizing gut morphology.  The prebiotic activity of Original XPC helps promote a healthy balance of bacteria in the lower gastrointestinal tract, while the antioxidant activity improves immune function.

Now, a new human study may lend even more credence to this Diamond V hallmark benefit. Our sister company, Embria Health Sciences, recently participated in a study using a human "gut health simulator." This simulator, housed in Belgium, models the biochemistry of the human gut. The trial involved EpiCor, Embria's human nutritional fermentate for immune health, and rendered some fascinating results.

Not only did EpiCor stimulate growth of several key beneficial gut bacteria, but also lowered production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, an important immune-balancing result that suggests EpiCor directly impacts beneficial immune cell activity.

While EpiCor is formulated for human consumption and is not the same as Diamond V Original XPC, the fundamental technology and mode of action is similar; promoting healthier digestive function that drives a more balanced, healthier immune response. Healthier people and healthier, higher-producing poultry are proving that every day.

As always, we appreciate your readership of PoultryAdvisor and always welcome your input.

Preparing for heat stress

An abstract referenced in the online magazine World Poultry brings to mind the yearly problem faced by the poultry industry in the US: preparing for summer heat stress. Besides adding 115 to 180 mg ascorbic acid per pound of feed to help flocks through the stress of summer's heat, the following should also be considered in your arsenal of weapons:
  • Inspect the fan function of all fans.
Clean fan and louver blades, tighten belts, replace worn belts, etc. to optimize airflow.
  • Inspect air inlets to assure they are open fully and not blocked by dirt buildup on bird wires or by other obstructions.
  • Be sure all generators are operating and can run on a full load in preparation for any power outages. It only takes about 10 to 15 minutes without the ventilation system running to cause heat prostration in layers, heavy broilers, or heavy turkeys in 95F+ temperatures.
  • Add Diamond V Original XPC to all feeds as benefits of production were seen during hot weather during the conducting of the 38th North Carolina Layer Performance and Management Test.
  • Add extra vitamin E to the rations, 115 mg/lb.
  • Be sure waterlines are clean and delivering the maximum amount of water they can.
  • For a more thorough discussion of preparing for heat stress this summer, please see this article.
